The Best

It was October 11, 1975.

Before Saturday Night Live became a legend, seven mostly unknown performers were trying to survive live television at 11:30 on a Saturday night.

Gilda Radner. Jane Curtin. Chevy Chase. Laraine Newman. Garrett Morris. John Belushi. Dan Aykroyd.

They were called the Not Ready for Prime Time Players—a joke of a name for a cast that would change comedy forever.

They made television feel dangerous, weird, fast, and alive. Gilda created characters people still quote. Belushi brought chaos. Aykroyd brought invention. Jane brought precision. Chevy brought swagger. Laraine brought range. Garrett brought style and musicality.

They did not inherit a classic show.

They built one.
