We’re often asked, “Why is a rabies vaccine required for my pet?”
Rabies is a serious and almost always fatal disease. Fortunately, vaccination is the best preventive measure available. In addition, rabies vaccination is required by law for dogs, cats, and ferrets in most jurisdictions.
Rabies doesn’t just affect our pets—it can also become a public health concern because it can spread between animals and people.

Even pets that spend most of their time indoors can be exposed. Any pet can be at risk if they live in an area where wildlife is present. Cats, in particular, can be exposed if they get outside—or if a bat or other wildlife finds its way into the home.
Here’s an important statistic: Of all rabid dogs reported to the CDC between 2002 and 2022, only 2.56% had a documented history of rabies vaccination.
