This has been my thoughts on medicating dogs as well.

We can do better to help vets deal with anxious dogs that need shots etc.

If we lead dogs well, they’ll have a better time at the vet and won’t need to be on certain meds to deal with the pressures of life.

Sometimes this.

These stories are always closer to the ideal, and as trainers we look forward to them. Not because they are easy, but because they are how things are supposed to progress.

Cudos to this dog’s owners.

If you are mentally, and, or emotionally unstable, you cannot have a mentally and emotionally stable dog.

Unfortunately, people treat their dogs in such a way that they become bullies. This happens A LOT.

(Getting A Dog)
Pure Bred Vs. Mutt, Breeder Vs. Shelter

I’m not touching on everything but making general statements.

If you get a puppy from an ethical breeder of great caliber, your chances of getting a dog that deals well with training and the pressures of life goes up dramatically. It’s the difference of training in a matter of days and weeks, then maintaining, or months.

*Now, this is of course a general statement.*

We’re talking about what is a safer bet for households looking to get a dog.

It is true that I have worked mutts and dogs from shelters that have been amazing, learned rapidly, and done well overall. But many have come with baggage, and decisions pushed upon them without your consent, etc.

This is basic. If you mess with genetics they break down and the result can be an animal that is afraid for no reason, can’t handle life, and takes a very long time to train, to build confidence, trust and joyful work. If you get a dog from a shelter that is older, you roll the dice. Even a younger dog that didn’t come from an ethical breeder can be a similar dice throw.

Now, I haven’t said anything here about the reality of your lifestyle and how that drastically affects dogs and their behavior.

But don’t have a hero complex. It’s unhealthy and will leave you unable to self-care and thus unable to care for others, including the dog.

These aren’t absolutes but a call to wisdom and being responsible. It’s not like buying furniture or a TV. They are living creatures with emotions that can be impacted by many things they did or didn’t ask for.

If you rush to say, “I can handle it!” You’re already demonstrating that you probably can’t.

Food for thought. Be wise. Know yourself.

But if you communicate the opposite, you harden the dog incredibly. Cesar is right.

IT’S TIME TO WAKE UP❗️
The Force-Free Lobby Is Moving Fast.

Dog training is under attack, not by science, not by welfare concerns, but by ideology disguised as ethics!

A new “Joint Standards of Practice” was just released by APDT, IAABC, KPA and others.
If this becomes the accepted “standard of care,” here’s what follows:
Tool bans
Licensing controlled only by force-free organizations
Elimination of R- and P+ from professional training
Criminalization or disqualification of balanced trainers
Courts and legislators using THEIR paperwork as the only definition of “humane”

This is not accidental.
It is a coordinated move to take over the entire profession and silence everyone who isn’t “science based”!
And once this framework is adopted, reversing it will be impossible.

We need to step up now.
Not next year.
Not when a ban hits your city. Now❗️

If you haven’t joined IACP you need to do it.

I also believe there has to be a Balanced Training Coalition!!!
A unified front of trainers, working-dog professionals, behaviorists, and organizations who refuse to let ideology rewrite the laws of learning or erase the methods that keep people and dogs safe.
