Duarte Horse Ranch, Inc. a 501c3 Non-Profit Corporation At this time, as of late 2023, Manny and I are very sad to say that we need to retire from taking on any new horses or other animals.

Sad as we are about this, we need to be realistic and also responsible toward the current animals who rely on us. I am almost 70 and my health and abilities have declined. Although I am still able to take care of the 5 horses and total of 47 animals we have, I cannot take on any more. The animals we currently have will be with us until either they or we pass away. We have made care provisions for those that will still remain after we are gone and they will continue to remain on the current premises. We have always considered it a real blessing to be able to do this work and that it was a way we could serve The Lord, as we helped our local community members and took on their horses that were no longer able to be cared for due to financial or health concerns of the owners or were abandoned or unwanted (mainly seniors). We took pride in rescuing, rehabilitating, refeeding, retraining, providing sanctuary and loving these horses. Also, by helping to educate or otherwise assist the public about horses, their uses, and care. Our horses have served the disabled, local youth, and local veterans. All that aside, however, we do need to consider the current animals we are responsible for and due to our age, abilities, and (soon enough a fixed income) we need to retire. We want to thank all of our supporters throughout the past ten years and let you know how very grateful we are. We will continue to appreciate all future donations for our current animals' continued care. We will also continue to keep this page but thought we should make a public announcement about no longer being able to accept new animals.

Historically, gastric impaction in horses has a poor outcome. Researchers at Utrecht University retrospectively reviewed cases of gastric impaction to evaluate whether treatment with cola was associated with improved survival.

Of the 125 cases included, 57.6% were discharged from the hospital. Horses treated with cola had a greater likelihood of survival: 82.8% vs. 35.8%. Non-Friesian horses treated with cola had 90% survival.

We have a heat wave here. It’s not that often but when it happens, our routine changes. I learned that the heat index for horses is calculated differently than for humans. We add the temperature and humidity score together and the sum is the horse heat index (probably dogs too?). So we have been turning 4-5 of our 6 out only while we clean stalls and inside waterers. Basically from 9:30-12:00 noon. Then we hose the horses and return to their stalls with fans (24/7) and fresh hay. I also give powdered electrolytes in some watered hay pellets to some horses. They also get added electrolytes with their dinner feed buckets.
Our mini, Ought, is early 30s and he has Cushings and he doesn’t sweat (anhydrosis) so he’s happy to stay in his big stall. Our pony, Prince, is now 27 and also has Cushings and anhydrosis but he’s okay to go out in this weather as long as we watch him carefully, his dry lot is entirely in the shade. Pete and Renny, both 19, are okay to go out for a few hours. Jasoor is 17 and has a heart condition but he’s very good at self management so he can go out and we just watch him carefully. Sara is 14 and has Cushings and very thick and longer hair (which we have shaved but it grows back quickly) so she can go out but we watch her. I don’t turn them out to pasture where I can’t see them in this weather. I’m not saying that’s not a good idea for other horse owners to turn out in pasture. However, mine are easier to keep track of in the shaded dry lot areas, it’s easier to keep them less active, and bring them out to be hosed and return to clean, well ventilated stalls.
