Food for thought - I had an unfortunate morning with a lovely client. She has 3 young horses, all with very little training.
The gelding has become increasingly pushy, impatient, and kicky. I mentioned to the client that I was not comfortable picking up his hind feet, as he can kick in a flash. The last couple of trims, she held his hinds and I managed to get him trimmed.
Today, he fired a hind and knocked her to the ground. :(
Is he a bad horse - nope. Does he need to learn some manners? 1000%.
This is a 12-hand pony and he could have killed her.
What's my point? Every horse needs to have a basic set of life skills. Standing for the farrier, getting caught, learning to stand tied, etc...

It is Florida and we are having a wet summer. Lots of white line and central sulcus infections. Here is my fav recipe to clear things up.
Large tub of Desitin.
4 - 6 oz of finely ground copper sulfate.
Mix to form a thick, blue paste.
Apply to white line areas.
In the central sulcus, use a popsicle stick, and push the mix in gently. The tissue is super sensitive. Then fill the area with cotton balls or makeup remover pads. Change daily. You should notice the central sulcus start to open after a few days.
Cautionary note! Always wear gloves when applying this mix. Copper sulfate and eyes do not mix! Don't ask how I know this. :(

Summer hooves - that's what's on my mind this morning.
I just came in from trimming 3 of my herd of 9. I was amazed at how great their hooves looked.
Confession time - do I pick feet daily? No way.
Do I apply hoof oil daily? maybe 3-4 times per week?
But here's the deal - I feed Madbarn 3:1.

Game changer.
But the #1 thing that makes a difference in the summer here in Florida is the frequency of trims. My entire herd is done at least every 4 weeks, some 3 weeks. After trimming, I apply a liberal coating of a Hoof Sealant, something similar to this product.
So, food for thought. Let's say you tighten the trim schedule from May to September to every 4 weeks. Yes, it will cost a bit more, but what is the price for a lame horse?

Which hoof does your horse have?

A very important photo comparing 2 digital cushions. One bad one good.

Both were Standardbreds, both feet were forefeet. Similar ages, both paddock pets.

What makes a good cushion? Its size and its composition, its elasticity and its resilience to loading. It protects the inner foot from damaging concussion forces at every foot fall and we can see nicely it is an important support for the bony column. Its important for blood movement inside the foot

Note how the bones are slumped in the top photo and how much straighter they are in the bottom photo?

If I moved the bones to a better, straighter position, I’d have to move the DDFT and skin and I don’t think I’d get the stretch!

I often this the slumped P2 in radiographs and it’s very commonly associated with a poor, crushed, low volume digital cushion that has lost its vital fibrocartilage

This leads to broken back bony column.
