Do you have an emergency fund set up for your fur-babies?
I know it may seem weird. But, if you've ever been to the vet for a check-up, you know how quickly costs can add up.
I'm going to share my story below because I learned a BIG lesson when it comes to putting money aside in case of a pet emergency.
Last year was hard for a lot of reasons. It was 2020... need I say anything more?
Towards the end of the year my boyfriend and I went through a difficult situation with our cat, Sebastian,
Sebastian had swallowed something that caused an obstruction in his intestines.
At first, we had no idea what was going on, so our regular vet at Banfield suggested X-rays to check if anything odd was going on. When they got the results back, it didn't show anything. The vet just suggested waiting to see if he got better in a few days.
After 3 more days went by, Sebastian's energy was so low -he rarely came out from under the bed, and his appetite was non-existent. This is a big deal for a cat whose nickname is Garfield. He also threw up anything he would eat.
I had to call multiple vets to get different opinions, and we decided to go to Colorado Veterinary Specialty Group in Littleton.
They did an ultrasound and that's when they found the obstruction. They had to perform immediate surgery to avoid risking anymore internal damage.
The next day, Sebastian got out of surgery and the vet said if we had waited any longer, the object would have gone too far and could have been way worse. He made a full recovery and instantly started to feel better.
As a side note, I recommend Colorado Veterinary Specialty Group if your pet has to have surgery! They honestly put all of my worries at ease.
Moral of the story, if I would do it over again, I would get pet insurance or set up an automatic emergency savings account. We ended up spending over $4,000 over some tiny thing Sebastian swallowed.
The money part was so hard because we were not in a position to drop that much money.... who is? But, when it comes to your pet can you really put a price on it?? Unfortunately, money doesn't cease to exist in these really difficult moments.
Are you prepared in case your pet gets sick?
