Yesterday we jumped into recall work with Earl and he was all in! His willingness to engage and put in the work made the session a huge success! Watching the pieces start to click this early is always rewarding.

Reliable recall is one of the most important skills a dog can learn, and Earl is already off to a fantastic start. I can't wait to keep building on this foundation and see where he goes from here. 🥰

A little recap of Ember’s first week of training!

We’ve been busy building on her foundation and helping her become more confident and reliable in a variety of situations. This week we’ve worked on place and downs with distractions for impulse control, door manners, recalls, generalizing her downs in new environments, and improving her leash manners / heel work.

Ember has been doing an amazing job soaking everything in, and it’s been so fun watching her progress each day. She has a great foundation to build from, and I’m excited to continue helping her reach her goals! 🫶

Earl officially started obedience training this morning, and I couldn't be more impressed with him! 🥰

He caught on so quickly and is incredibly eager to learn. You can see him starting to relax, decompress, and finally feel safe enough to just be a dog. 🫶 Watching his confidence grow already has been so rewarding!

This sweet boy has such a bright future ahead of him, and I can't wait to continue helping him become the best version of himself. ❤️

Earl is safe. 🫶

I’m excited to share that Earl will be joining me for training as he starts his next chapter. Earl was recently considered code red through Friends of Minneapolis Animal Care and Control, but thanks to everyone who advocated, shared, and supported him, he now has the opportunity he deserves.

I’ll be working with Earl through PJ's Rescue to help him decompress, build confidence, learn structure, and prepare him for his forever home.

Like many dogs, Earl hasn’t had an easy start. Shelter life can be incredibly stressful, and after multiple transitions, he needs time, patience, and guidance to truly succeed.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing updates on Earl’s progress and showing everyone what this goofy, energetic boy is capable of.

Thank you to everyone who helped give Earl a second chance. Welcome to your fresh start, Earl! We're so excited to have you here! 🥰

On Tuesday Oakley and Ember spent the day working alongside Moose, Ace, Axel, and Marshall from Black Onyx Dog Training LLC.

We focused on socialization, place, down, door manners, leash skills, and obedience around distractions. Group training like this helps dogs learn to stay focused and apply their training in new environments.

I also think it’s important for trainers to work together and support each other. Collaborating with other trainers allows us to share knowledge, create more training opportunities, and ultimately do what’s best for the dogs. 🥰

🎓 A big congratulations to Abe on graduating from his 5-week private lesson program! 🐾

We wrapped up his final lesson today in his home, where we were able to put all of his training into real-life practice and make sure his family felt confident handling everyday situations.

Over the past five weeks, Abe has made incredible progress in his obedience, recall, leash manners, and overall engagement. But the best part isn't just how much Abe has learned—it's how much his family has learned alongside him.

That's one of the greatest benefits of private lessons. Not only does your dog learn the skills they need, but you gain the confidence and knowledge to continue building on that training long after our lessons are over.

I'm so proud of everything Abe and his family have accomplished together. Congratulations, Abe—I can't wait to see all the adventures ahead! 🥰

When Oakley’s dad dropped her off, one of the things he mentioned was that she wasn’t always listening when she was called to come back inside. So we made strengthening her recall one of our main goals during her refresher training.

Oakley has been doing amazing! This video shows her practicing multiple recalls in a brand-new environment, including inside Home Depot, and she is choosing to come back even with new distractions around her.

A reliable recall is one of the most important skills a dog can have. It helps keep them safe, gives them more freedom, and builds trust between the dog and handler. Recall work isn’t just about practicing in the backyard — it’s about building that response everywhere.

🐾 Massive Photo Dump 🐾

Yesterday, Ember and Oakley escaped the heat with a training field trip to Home Depot and Bass Pro! We were also joined by Moose and Ace from Black Onyx Dog Training LLC, giving all four dogs the opportunity to practice their obedience alongside each other in busy public environments.

Anyone can have a dog that listens in the living room—but the real test is when there are shopping carts rolling by, people stopping to say hello, loud noises, new smells, and endless distractions. That's where confidence is built.

For Oakley, these outings are incredibly important as a therapy dog. She needs to remain calm, neutral, and reliable no matter where she's visiting or who she's meeting. For Ember, who is a service dog in training, every public outing helps prepare her for the responsibility of working alongside her handler in everyday life.

Training isn't just about teaching commands—it's about creating dogs that can confidently navigate the world with their people.

I'm incredibly proud of these four dogs and grateful to Black Onyx Dog Training for joining us. It's always great to work alongside other trainers who share the same goal of setting dogs up for success. 🖤🫶

🐾 Welcome, Ember! 🐾

I'm excited to welcome Ember for a 4-week Board & Train!
Ember comes to me through Fortitude Service Dogs, a 501(c)(3) public charity based in Duluth that provides service dogs to disabled military veterans and children. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to sponsor Ember and be a small part of her journey. 🫶

Ember already has a great foundation of training, so over the next four weeks we'll be pairing the e-collar to her known commands, continuing to build reliability, confidence, and consistency, while preparing her for the next stages of her training. We'll be working toward setting her up for success as she continues on her path to completing her Canine Good Citizen (CGC) series and Public Access Test.

I'm looking forward to sharing her progress over the next month and watching her continue to grow. Welcome to Cassandra's Canine Training, Ember! Isn't she so beautiful?! 😍
