Resource guarding part 2

In our last video, we showed kane guarding a ball a behavior that led to two shelter returns. Kane is sweet with people and other animals; resource guarding is his only challenge.

After 3–4 days practicing “leave it,” he’s doing great with no growling or aggression. We will continue to document his progress!

Kane is here working on resource guarding. When he has a ball, he becomes very possessive. He will lay on top of it to protect it and has bitten hands multiple times when someone tries to take it.

Kane has bitten people and has been returned to the shelter twice because of his resource guarding. He was deemed aggressive at the shelter, when toys aren’t involved, he is a friendly, loving, and good boy. His owners want to learn how to stop this behavior and help him make better choices.

We are going to teach Kane “drop it” and “leave it,” along with consequences for biting.

Cool nights > hot days
Buddy has been getting in some late night obedience repetition working on his off leash obedience. Taking advantage of the cooler weather whenever we can!

Before you buy a new collar or harness for your dog, make sure you’re choosing the right gear. Pay attention to the buckles and hardware. I personally recommend avoiding cheap plastic buckles and going with strong metal buckles whenever possible, especially for larger or stronger dogs. Your gear is only as reliable as the weakest part holding it together.

Before introducing an e-collar, your dog should already know their basic commands really well. The e-collar isn’t meant to teach a dog something new it helps reinforce commands they already understand.

It also shouldn’t hurt or scare them. Your dog shouldn’t jump, squeal, yelp, or act uncomfortable. We look for the smallest response, like an ear twitch or slight change in focus, to find their working level.

Blu’s before and after

Blu came to us struggling with sit, down, stay, heel, recall, and jumping—especially when water was involved. Now he can stay focused, follow commands, and recall away from the water even when he would rather be swimming!

Puppy refuses to walk and just sits down? Keep walking!

A lot of puppies quickly learn that if they stop, Mom and Dad stop too. Once they realize sitting down isn’t going to end the walk, they usually start moving right along.

Consistency is key. Don’t let the puppy decide when the walk is over!

Only ONE week into E-collar training and look at her go!!!

Running right next to me in a solid heel at soccer practice with people, kids, noise, and distractions everywhere, and she’s staying locked in right by my side.

This is what we’re looking for: clear communication, focus, and obedience even when the environment gets busy. We’re only a week in and she’s already making huge progress!
