I had a new client the other day. Lovely QH mare presenting with overall footsoreness, especially the right front/left hind diagonal pair.
The owner and I discussed her radiographs and the mare’s current level of (dis)comfort. Our plan was to get the mare’s feet rebalanced and back under herself, so as to get the bony columns better aligned.
This horse was a fun mental challenge for me because she has some pretty impressive “twisty legs”. I got to pull from all facets of my knowledge and, I dare say, think almost in 4 dimensions.
She had some signs of chronic, slow brewing changes in her feet that would explain her discomfort after a trim if left barefoot. As well as some long toes and runaway (tall and run forward) heels on all 4.
Her shoe of choice was the Roller shoe on all four feet. On the fronts, I put her in 4° half mesh wedge pads with soft DIM, and of course Artimud. On the hinds, I went with 3° half mesh wedges and medium DIM with Artimud underneath. To finish it all off, I used HoofLox acrylic in natural, and a final layer of superglue to help seal the edges.
It took the mare a couple minutes of moving after she got her shoes to really start feeling confident in her new feet. The more she walked, the longer and more confident her strides became, and she was more than happy to bear full weight on each foot.
