šš“ FALL IS HEREāLETāS TALK ABOUT EQUINE CUSHINGāS!
Is your horse slow to shed, losing topline, acting less energetic, or not sweating? These changes may be more than ājust getting older.ā
PPID (pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction), commonly called equine Cushingās disease, is a progressive hormonal disorder that affects the pituitary gland.
š WHY TEST IN THE FALL?
ACTHāthe hormone measured when testing for PPIDānaturally rises in late summer and fall. Horses with PPID often have a more pronounced rise, making fall a useful time to investigate suspected disease. At Payne Equine, we interpret results using seasonally appropriate ranges and your horseās clinical signs.
š“ WHICH HORSES ARE AT RISK?
⢠Older horses and ponies, especially those over 15.
⢠Horses of any breed, whether retired or still actively competing.
⢠Horses as young as 10 can be affected, particularly when suspicious signs are present.
⢠Older horses with recurrent laminitis, unexplained muscle loss, or repeated infections deserve evaluation.
š SIGNS TO WATCH FOR:
⢠Delayed shedding or a long, sometimes curly hair coat.
⢠Loss of muscle and topline, sometimes with a potbellied appearance.
⢠Decreased energy or performance.
⢠Excessive sweating/Not sweaiting enough
⢠Increased drinking and urination.
⢠Recurrent infections or slow wound healing.
⢠Laminitis, foot soreness, or a reluctance to move.
Early signs can be subtleāyou donāt have to wait for a long, curly coat to ask about testing!
š HOW IS PPID TREATED?
⢠Daily pergolide is the primary treatment.
⢠Follow-up examinations and blood testing help guide treatment.
⢠Individualized nutrition, hoof care, dental care, and parasite control support overall health.
⢠Insulin testing may also be recommended, especially with laminitis, because elevated insulin requires additional management.
PPID has no cure, but treatment and thoughtful management can improve clinical signs and quality of life.
