Castration is common — but not risk-free. 🐴 Dr. Megan Slamka, DVM, breaks down the potential complications, why setting and timing matter, and what every horse owner should know to keep their geldings safe. Read the full article for practical guidance and when to call your vet: https://wix.to/7wYoUHX

Key topics: anesthesia risks, post-op care, infection prevention, and signs of complications. Share to help other horse owners stay informed.

By Megan Slamka, DVMCastration is one of the most common surgeries performed on male horses, but “common” does not mean “risk-free.” Many gelding procedures happen outside a hospital, often in a field or barn setting under injectable general anesthesia. Most horses recover without major prob...

Today we remember 9/11. A tragic day that forever shaped many of our lives, including mine. Today my husband, fresh out of boot camp, found out he was deploying to the Middle East. Today I remember the first responders at ground zero and I remember the soldiers who went to war for our country and never made it home. This post shares a very important role that horses had in the war in Afghanistan. Shoreline Equine supports our first responders and our military service members— Thank you 🇺🇸

2. The Horse Soldier watching over Ground Zero ⭐⭐⭐

A 16-foot bronze monument known as the Horse Soldier now stands in Liberty Park, overlooking the National September 11 Memorial.

Officially titled America’s Response Monument, it depicts a US Army Special Forces soldier riding an Afghan horse. It commemorates the Special Forces teams sent into Afghanistan in the weeks following 9/11, some of whom travelled through mountainous terrain on horseback.

The monument contains a piece of steel recovered from the World Trade Center and was created by sculptor Douwe Blumberg, who had worked as a horse trainer for many years.

Suggested headline:

WHY A LONE HORSE AND RIDER STAND WATCH OVER GROUND ZERO

This is the strongest historical angle because many people will have seen the statue without knowing the story behind it. The monument was dedicated in 2011 and moved permanently to Liberty Park in 2016. US Army account of the monument.

When this young Quarter Horse began bucking under saddle and kicking while being cinched, his owner brought him in for a scope of his stomach. He was diagnosed with very severe, bleeding gastric ulcers. He was started on a month long course of Gastrogard along with dietary changes. After treatment, he had a repeat scope which showed amazing progress! His ulcers had completely healed and the lining of his stomach appears normal.

Many of you have had the chance to meet Alayna this summer in the clinic and out on farm calls. After shadowing with us for a few years, she stepped into an assistant role in May and has been an amazing part of the team. This week, we said see you later as she heads off to MSU to start her pre-vet studies. We are so excited for our future vet student and can’t wait to hear about all her adventures when she comes back to visit! Good luck Alayna! 💙

🔥 Wildfire Smoke & Horse Health 🐴💨

Poor air quality can be harmful not only to us but our horses too. Smoke from wildfires can irritate a horse's respiratory system and cause fatigue, coughing, difficulty breathing, etc.

You can monitor local air quality at www.airnow.gov. During periods of poor air quality, you can protect your horse's health by:

🐎 Limiting or avoiding exercise.
💧 Providing free access to fresh water.
💦 Controlling dust such as watering dry lots and soaking or feeding dust-free hay.
🕰 Allowing time for recovery: airway damage from wildfire smoke takes 4 to 6 weeks to heal after air quality returns to normal.
☎️ Consult your vet if you notice signs of smoke irritation.
