It can be tempting to train them together because...well, they're both right there. 😂

But sometimes the BEST place to start is separately.

Because each dog needs to learn how to focus on YOU without relying on the other dog.

If your dog is focused on everything except you, it’s going to be pretty difficult to ask them to heel, come when called, or calmly walk past distractions.
That’s where rewards come in! 🦴

Using something your dog values—like treats, praise, toys, or play—helps teach them that paying attention to YOU is worth it.

Start simple! Reward your dog when they:

🐾 Look at you on their own
🐾 Respond to their name
🐾 Check in with you during a walk
🐾 Choose you over a distraction

Over time, your dog begins to learn: “When I pay attention to my person, good things happen!” ❤️
Rewards aren’t just about giving your dog treats—they’re a way to communicate, reinforce good choices, and build engagement between you and your dog.

But before we decide that, let's ask a few questions:

Does your dog understand what you're asking?

Have they practiced that behavior in different environments?

Are there distractions?

Is the behavior rewarding for them?

Are we asking for too much too quickly?

Dogs aren't robots.

Sometimes what looks like “stubbornness” is actually confusion, distraction, lack of reinforcement, or simply being a DOG. 😂

Understanding the reason behind a behavior is the first step toward changing it.

Sometimes progress looks like:

✨ Your dog recovering faster after getting excited.

✨ Choosing to look at you instead of reacting.

✨ Holding a position for a few extra seconds.

✨ Walking past a distraction a little closer than before.

✨ Settling down faster.

✨ You feeling more confident handling your dog.

Those little victories matter.

Loose-leash walking is a SKILL.

Your dog isn't born knowing how to politely walk next to you while ignoring squirrels, smells, people, other dogs, and approximately 47,000 fascinating blades of grass.

It takes practice.

Start somewhere your dog can succeed.

Reward engagement with you.

Gradually add distractions.

And remember: you don't have to train the entire walk.

❌ Only practicing when something is going wrong
❌ Forgetting to reward the behavior they WANT to see

Training isn't just about correcting unwanted behavior.

It's about noticing when your dog gets it right—and letting them know!

Dogs have always been more than just animals to me. They're companions, family members, and sometimes the little creatures who know exactly when we need them most.

That's one of the reasons I love dog training.

I don't just want to teach a dog a command.

I want to help owners understand their dogs.

I want walks to become enjoyable again.
