The Humane Society of Monroe County (HSMC) was founded in 1954 by Monroe County residents who were concerned for the welfare of the companion animals in our community. For approximately 50 years, the society has operated a shelter where stray, abandoned or surrendered animals receive care – food, shelter, medical attention and love – until they can be placed in a permanent home. The society also p

romotes the humane treatment of animals through education; attempts to re-unite lost animals with their owners and provides a subsidized low or no cost spay/neuter program for Monroe County residents on disability, Medicaid, social security or other income restrictions (contact the admin. office for more information or to see if you might qualify for this program.) The HSMC is a non-profit, no-kill organization governed by a volunteer board of directors. We employ a small but dedicated staff to care for the animals, operate the shelter and conduct our outreach programs and events. Currently, the society does not receive government funding. Our budget is comprised of fundraising events, memberships, donations, cage sponsors and adoptions. A dedicated group of volunteers provides invaluable assistance in conducting our community outreach programs. The Humane Society of Monroe County is an independent Humane Society. We are not part of, nor do we receive any support from the Michigan Humane Society, American Humane Association or the Humane Society of the United States. We only exist because of support of the people of Monroe County and friends in surrounding areas. FACEBOOK CODE OF CONDUCT:

Meet Rusty!

Rusty is a 5 yr old Sheltie. Rusty was surrender due to the owner allergies and is a great dog. He is amazing with kids, lived in a home with a cat and has played with dogs.

Rusty is not neutered yet so he will have to stay close. The family would like for him to go to a home with kids and a fenced in yard. He has moderate to high energy but doesn’t play with toys.

Yesterday was a super different kind of day for us here at the shelter. We had 2 different owner call to surrender pure bred cats. Thankfully we had two cats go home and we had two available spaces and we know we will find homes pretty fast for these kitties.
We will be taking multiple applications to pick the best home for these animals.

Meet Bella!

Bella is a 6 yr old
Teacup(5 lbs) Persian cat. She is fixed and front paw declawed.Bella does not like children. They are loud, fast and they scare her. She will need to go to a calm home preferable with no other animals that can give her the care and attention she is use to.
She will need regular grooming and vet visits.

Meet Mandy!

Mandy is a 1O month old  Himalayan kitten. Mandy does Not like other animal would also need a calm home. She will be spayed in a couple of weeks so we will be picking a local home for her.

At this time we will not be send them to any rescues so please do not tag any. We will let you know if that changes.

We are now looking for volunteers in our dog and cat rooms. Currently we start the process at 8 am for both areas to clean the kennels for the animals. You must be 18 yrs old and wear jeans and athletic shoes or waterproof footwear.
For dog walking we walk dogs from 1pm to 4pm weather permitting.
For our cat room we start cleaning at 8 am as well. We need help cleaning kennels, laundry, dishes and much more.

Meet Sweet Briar!

This amazing 2 yr old girl came to us as a stray and wasn’t reclaimed. She is now fully vetted and ready for her new home.
She has been to community events and has done wonderful with everyone she meets including kids.
She actually really loves kids and would do great in a family. She does good with other dogs as well but we have not tested her with cats.

Our Art Contest has ended and we are so excited and grateful about the 12 entries that we had. The artists that submitted artwork were Kalei Hoppert, Kaylee Allen, Callie Krieger, Lydia Kozlowski., Donell Strine, Connie Gotz (who submitted two), Jeremy Somers, Janna Millner, Lauren Kopp, Rylee Dunn and Bailey Mruzik. In third place was Bailey Mruzik, second place was Rylee Dunn and in first was Connie Gotz.
So much talent every entry was done with love and thought. It was a difficult process for some to pick their favorites.
We also want to thank the sponsors who hosted the events, Pavlovs Brewing Co.,The Michigan W**e and B**r Portal, Jerrys Frenchtown Bar and Grill, Mugsys Sports Grille & Bar, Dirty Birdy,
Casa De Margarita and Applebees.
We are at $3,790. raised so far with some pledges still to be sent in.
Each of the works were so great, two of the entrys Kalei and Rylee added our shelter dog Popeye in their work, Lydia put an incredible amount of detail in her work. All of the works were fantastic and the sayings on them were great. Thanks to everyone involved!!

Great Things are happening to great people, we have the most dedicated people here, both staff and volunteers. We have lost a lot of our staff lately not because of problems but because they are moving on with their lives to careers, jobs and things we cannot provide. Many have gone back to school, some have taken the next steps in career goals. We could not be happier for them and support them 1000% . At the same time we are worried and sad. We have these excellent people who we now have to replace. We need people who care about animals and who are willing to work hard, have great days and some really terrible ones and still come back knowing that it is because of the animals. We need some strong kennel people, it is hard work but yet very rewarding and we try to add perks to the wages to make it worth your time. We also need a medical room person. The wages for these positions are negotiable but keep in mind that we are a non-profit and we don't have the funds to pay probably what you are worth, but we do the best we can. Days and hours are negotiable so if you have it in your heart even part time please contact us or come in for an interview. Our summer students have all gone back to school and Shaun our supervisor had an offer he could not refuse, he is leaving us with a heavy heart but the opportunity is not one he can walk away from, nor can we let him. So, if Shaun has helped you over the years, wish him well as he starts a new chapter. We are hoping he will be able to volunteer once in a while, but above all else we wish him well and will miss him.

Carmen and Greg have been long time supporters of the Humane Society and over the years have taken in many rescue animals. At our last Auction event we decided to auction off months where the successful bidder may tell a story or stories of their experiences with pets in thier lives instead of calendars. They purchased September and here is their story....
We went to visit a friend who has a dog rescue; JUST VISITING.
One Red Dog with a crooked face caught my eye, her story was very sad indeed. She had a crooked face, squinty eye, broken ear, saggy skin, bald spots and missing teeth. Her name was Lola.
We sat on the deck inquiring about this Red Dog when another Red Dog came on the deck and allowed us to pet her. She was covered in scabs head to toe, no hair, missing teeth, skinny and depressed. She was the sorriest dog I have ever seen and looking way worse than Lola, she was called Lila. After about 10 minutes the crooked-faced dog came on the deck and allowed us to pet her. My friend stated that neither dog had ever approached anyone, not even him, he was astonished.

I told him we would take the crooked-faced dog and he said, "You have to take the other one." I said, "What other one?!" and he pointed to the sorriest dog I had ever seen. A few choice words were uttered then I looked at Greg and said, "I guess we have been chosen. It's going to be a lot of work getting them well." No one was going to adopt these sad dogs. They came from the same abusive/neglected situation and were bonded and clung to each other for comfort.
Lila, now Birdie, and Lola came home the next day. Both needed three medicated baths a week for a month. They were also given rest, nutrition and lots of love. Lola hid behind the furniture for many months. Two years later they are now two beautiful Red Dogs with fluffy coats and lots of personality.
They are numbers 14 and 15 of all my past rescue-adopted dogs.
