What a change between these photos! Almost always the best thing for a young horse is time. Time to grow. Time to mature physically, and just as important mentally. Time to learn the basics. Time to find their individual confidence. Time to find balance and rhythm. And, time to do all of this without creating stress!
This is Legro. He just turned 5 years old and has less than 20 rides on him. I sat on Legs for the very first time 2 years ago. So he has less than 20 rides in 730 days. This is what giving a young horse time looks like. 710+ days of nothing but time, helping him learn to be a good citizen without creating excess stress!

And always remember, when you know better - do better!

Sometimes we can be paralyzed with fear of making mistakes. We worry about ruining the horse, so we do too little, or nothing at all.

I’m far from perfect, and have certainly made many many mistakes with horses. What I’ve found is that horses love feeling guidance and certainty from a person, and very much dislike feeling wishy washy guidance.

I had an art teacher in college who would come around, watching all of us anxiously staring at a blank page, and he would say- “when you don’t know what to do, do something.”

You’re bound to make mistakes. Don’t be afraid to make them: learning is messy.
