Bat season has officially started! Three of our neighbors in rural eastern Snohomish county are receiving preventative Rabies treatment due to exposure to a bat found in their home over Memorial Day weekend that tested positive for Rabies. A viral disease of the Central Nervous System, untreated Rabies is always fatal in mammals. Meaning our dogs, cats (even indoor cats!)…and us! Pets up to date on their Rabies vaccines are protected, unvaccinated pets can become infected by a scratch or bite from an infected animal. Keeping your pets up to date on their Rabies vaccines is not only a good idea…it is also the law! Washington State rule, WAC 246-100-197, states “An owner of a dog, cat, or ferret shall have it vaccinated against rabies and revaccinated following veterinary and vaccine manufacturer instructions.” Please let us know if you have questions about the vaccine status of your pets…we can help keep everyone safer!
