Rescued from abuse or neglect or lately, simply unwitting victims of the economy, these horses found their way to CERA, Carolina Equine Rescue & Assistance. As you can imagine, caring for all these horses is time consuming and costly. Volunteers and donations are always highly valued at CERA. Established by Darlene in April 2008, CERA created a rescue
organization that not only worked with local law enforcement in seizure and surrenders, but one that could help educate owners on how to properly care for their animals and hopefully avoid unlawful neglect. Darlene also wanted to be able to take in horses that were at risk due to hardship of their owners, almost eerily forecasting the current state of our economy and the rapidly increasing numbers of abandoned pets. And most of all, Darlene wanted all monies donated to CERA to remain in Union County to help the horses locally, unlike other rescues. CERA also works to educate horse owners, law enforcement and animal control on basic equine management
With today's tight economy, many are finding it harder to make donations, even to organizations they have traditionally supported. Make a commitment to volunteer at CERA each week. Not an experienced horse person? No problem, there are plenty of different tasks involved in caring for all the horses, many of which don't require extensive horse handling skills. Darlene has a book filled with photos and stories of all
the horses she has cared for over the last 3 years. “Each horse has its own story and most are heartbreaking to animal lovers like yourself. Each animal also has its own personalities, likes and dislikes. CERA attempts to treat each animal under its protection with tender loving care until it is ready to be placed in its forever home.”
Good quality horse hay is always in demand. Sold your horse and have a few bales left over you hadn't used up yet? Consider making a tax-deductible donation of your remaining bales to CERA.

"VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ASAP!!"

There has got to be high school students that need community service, BETA Club, church clubs etc. Here's your opportunity.

Evening farm chores. Starts between 5:00-6:00. All the hard stuff is done in the morning. Animals need fed grain, hay and fresh water. Prepare breakfast. If they are in all due to the weather a quick mucking out the stall. Fill outside water trofts. Should only take 1.5 hours. And if you would like to stick around after chores are done to brush a horse you are more than welcome. Even if you can only do one evening a week that would be very helpful. Let me know.

Hey everyone. I rarely write a post like this, I only put something like this on social media, I would rather be safe than sorry. Everyone is struggling financially and I wouldn't ask if I didn't think this could get serious.

The price of diesel fuel is at an all time high. I realize this newscast is from Illinois. A friend of mine is an independent trucker and she saw the same price in Greenville SC. Which means the price of feed will be going up once again. I would like to get a good amount of feed before this happens.

If there is anyway you can dig a little deeper and help us out with a donation. Any amount will help, don't think $5 isn't going to help, it absolutely will.

First of all I hate to write this but I need to let you know that due to the Collins Cleaners fiasco I will not have any blankets this year for hardship cases. I'm so sorry. Wanted you to know early so you can find blankets or save for them if needed. Collins has now closed. For the last 12 or so years they always gave me any blankets that were not claimed. I'm not sure where or who has these blankets. I would inform animal control that I had extras if they have a horse in need. We are still missing 5 and no one is answering the phone. Again I am so sorry. I know there will be a tack sale at the Union Horse Expo September 19, 10:30 to 4:00, Crosscreek Arena in Wingate,you may be able to find one up there. Again. I'm so sorry
