Recall, Release & Movement as a Motivator! 🐾

Meet Griffey, a bright young German Shorthaired Pointer who's back with us for some Board & Train work!

Today we're working on recall and release, using a retractable leash to give Griffey some freedom to explore while we reinforce his responsiveness and engagement.

One of my favorite things to teach dogs is to key off my movement rather than constantly relying on verbal cues.

When I change direction, I want my dog to notice and respond naturally. No need to constantly say "Let's go!" or repeat commands. My movement becomes meaningful, and paying attention to me becomes part of the game.

We're also reinforcing that coming when called doesn't always mean the fun is over. Sometimes it means a quick check-in, a reward, and a release right back to exploring!

Griffey is a sharp little guy, and his owners deserve some credit, too! They've been putting in the work through our Puppy Socialization and Beginner Novice classes, building a great foundation that we can continue developing.

Even good dogs need a refresher now and then!

Chloe, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, is back with us for another Board & Train stay!

She's already got a great recall from our previous work together, but lately she's decided to test those boundaries a little. As dogs do!

So we're getting back to basics, using a retractable leash to reinforce that COME still means COME, even when something else seems more interesting.

Good training doesn't disappear overnight, but without consistent expectations and practice, even well-trained dogs can develop some selective hearing.

Training isn't something you finish. It's something you maintain.

We train it.

Day Training at Sparks K9 is about a lot more than obedience.

Dogs work through exercises designed to develop confidence, body awareness, trust in the handler, and cooperation.

That might mean climbing onto an unfamiliar surface, navigating something narrow or unstable, working at elevation, or simply learning to trust the handler when asked to do something that feels a little strange.

These exercises aren’t about forcing dogs through scary situations. They’re about teaching them:

“I can do hard things, and I can trust the person guiding me.”

That carries over into a whole lot more than climbing on training equipment.

Puppies are going to have drives and instincts.

Our job isn’t to squash them. It’s to teach them what to do with them.

Little Onyx the Doberman is learning the rules of tug during Puppy Socialization class, and she is having a blast doing it. 🖤

I love teaching proper play early because it gives puppies an appropriate outlet for things they already WANT to do: chase, bite, grab, pull, possess, and engage.

Instead of waiting for those natural behaviors to turn into stealing clothes, biting hands, grabbing the leash, chasing everything that moves, or playing keep-away, we can start teaching the puppy how to use those drives productively.

Play with energy. Bite the toy. Engage with your handler. Let go when asked. Re-engage when invited.

That is a whole lot more than “just playing tug.”

We are building communication, confidence, engagement, impulse control, and a puppy who learns that working WITH you is where the fun happens.

Start them young. Give the drive somewhere productive to go.

⚠️ DOG OWNER PSA:

If your dog shreds and swallows toys, unsupervised access can become a life-threatening problem.

Fair warning: This video is gross. It’s also worth sharing.

One of our Board & Train dogs arrived yesterday with some hidden luggage. This morning, he p**ped out a HUGE amount of what looks like a purple rope toy.

Apparently, he smuggled it in. Internally. 🤦‍♂️

There’s a little humor in the delivery, but the danger is real.

Swallowed toy pieces can cause intestinal blockages.

Rope and string are particularly dangerous because long strands can cause the intestines to bunch up and can cut through intestinal tissue. That can mean emergency surgery or worse.

And seeing some material come out does NOT prove that everything has passed.

A few simple rules:

• Supervise toy time, especially with dogs that shred, unravel, or swallow things.

• Remove toys when they start coming apart.

• Put rope toys and other easily destroyed toys away when playtime ends.

• Choose toys for the dog you actually have, including his size, chewing strength, and habits.

“He loves that toy” doesn’t mean it’s safe to leave him alone with it.

If you suspect your dog swallowed part of a toy, call your veterinarian promptly.

Don’t wait for vomiting, refusal to eat, belly pain, or unusual lethargy.

If string is hanging from his mouth or rear end, DO NOT pull it. Contact your vet.

Toys are for playing. Supervision is our responsibility.

I stepped into the back storage room to grab some equipment while 20+ Day School dogs were hanging out in the training room.

Ghost apparently decided somebody needed to oversee operations.

So naturally, she climbed onto the tallest plyo step she could find and assumed command.

No barking. No chaos. Just a Belgian Malinois sitting six feet above everybody else like:

“I’ll handle it from here.”
😂

Honestly, I’m not sure if she’s supervising Day School or judging everyone.

What would Ghost’s official job title be?

Happy 3rd Birthday to Zulu! 🎉🐾

Apparently, turning three means you’re old enough to have standards.

I asked Zulu for a down, and he started to comply… right up until he realized I was holding a bag of HIS p**p basically in his face. 😂

You can almost see the thought process:

“Sir… I will down… but must we conduct this exercise next to THAT?”

So yes, the down took a little longer and needed a couple extra reminders. I can’t even blame him. 🤣

Glow-in-the-dark balls, two dogs with plenty of energy, and absolutely no reason to stop playing just because the sun went down.
