💙🐾 **WOW. JUST WOW. OUR RESCUE COMMUNITY IS SOMETHING SPECIAL!**

Over the past several days, we've been asking for help. And you have answered with an incredible outpouring of kindness, encouragement, shares, messages, and offers to open your homes.

**From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!** 💙

When we shared the news about the Weimaraners needing our help, we knew we were asking a lot of our community.

What we weren't prepared for was just how many wonderful people would step forward, including people from well beyond North Carolina and South Carolina!

And that means more to us than you may ever know.

We've also received questions about why our foster families must be located in NC or SC when we can adopt our Weimaraners to families outside those states.

**That's a great question, and we'd love to explain!**

🏡 **FOSTERING VS. ADOPTING — WHY LOCATION MATTERS**

When a Weimaraner enters our rescue, their foster family becomes an essential part of our day-to-day rescue operations.

Fostering isn't simply providing a temporary place to sleep.

It means working closely with our rescue team while we get to know each dog's needs, coordinate veterinary appointments and medical care, help with transportation, evaluate behavior and temperament, and prepare that dog for a successful adoption.

Having our foster families located within **North Carolina and South Carolina** allows us to provide the hands-on coordination, communication, and support these dogs and their foster families deserve.

We want every dog who enters our rescue to have the best possible experience, and keeping our foster network within our service area helps us accomplish that.

🐾 **BUT WHAT ABOUT ADOPTION?**

Adoption is different!

Once a Weimaraner is ready for their forever home, **we can consider approved adoptive families outside North Carolina and South Carolina.**

Our goal is to find the RIGHT forever home for each dog, even when that home is beyond the Carolinas.

💙 **AND TO EVERYONE OUTSIDE NC & SC WHO OFFERED TO FOSTER...**

Please know how much we appreciate you!

While we may not be able to place a foster dog with you through Tarheel, there may be a Weimaraner rescue closer to your home that would LOVE to have your help.

💙🐾 MERLIN UPDATE: A NEW FOSTER HOME & A WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE TO THANK!

This past weekend was an absolute whirlwind for rescues all across the East Coast, and Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue was certainly no exception! Dogs were coming in, dogs were moving out, transports were being coordinated, and our volunteers were working overtime to make room for the next dogs who desperately needed us.

At our foster/trainer Vicki’s house, one dog barely had time to leave before another was scheduled to arrive that afternoon! And one of those precious departures was our sweet girl, Merlin!

After everything Merlin has been through since coming into rescue, we are so happy to announce that she has officially made her way to her new foster home in Charleston, South Carolina, with our wonderful foster mom, Michelle!

Michelle has no other dogs in her home, which means Merlin gets something pretty special: her very own human, all the attention she could possibly want, and a quiet, peaceful environment where she can finish her heartworm treatment without the excitement and activity of a multi-dog household.

As many of you know, Merlin has already been through quite a bit medically. She underwent an extensive spay and had two masses surgically removed, both of which thankfully came back benign. She has recovered from those surgeries, but she still has one very important medical hurdle ahead of her: heartworm treatment.

Heartworm treatment requires strict activity restriction, especially during and after her injections. While Merlin was recovering at Vicki’s house, surrounded by other dogs and all the excitement that comes with a busy foster environment, keeping this intelligent, opinionated girl calm was quite the challenge! She needed medication to help her settle and prevent her from overdoing things while healing.

At Michelle’s home, Merlin will have a much quieter environment with fewer distractions and less temptation to run, play, and participate in everyone else’s business. We are hopeful that this peaceful setting will allow her to remain calm with less need for additional calming medication while she completes her treatment under veterinary guidance.

Merlin will remain in foster care with Michelle throughout her heartworm treatment and recovery. Once she has completed treatment, finished her required rest period, and received veterinary clearance, we will begin preparing her for adoption following our normal adoption procedures.

For now, her only job is to relax, enjoy being spoiled, and let her body heal. We will be sharing plenty of updates from Michelle as Merlin settles into her new home and continues her journey toward becoming heartworm-free!

But getting Merlin to Charleston didn’t happen by magic. It took several incredible people working together, and we want to give them the recognition they deserve.

A huge thank-you to our Transport Coordinator, Brad!

Brad is one of those people who always seems to find a way to make things happen, even when we throw last-minute changes, difficult schedules, and multiple dogs needing transport at him all at once. And lately, with the number of dogs coming into rescue, we are REALLY putting his organizational skills to the test!

Brad, thank you for continuing to coordinate these moves, juggle schedules, and help us get our dogs safely where they need to be. We know how much work goes on behind the scenes, and we appreciate every bit of it!

A special thank-you to David!

David, who has also recently taken on the role of our Social Media Coordinator, stepped up without hesitation when we needed help with Merlin’s transport.

He met Vicki right at the veterinary office to pick up Merlin and take the first leg of her journey. This allowed Vicki to finish what she needed to do and get back on the road to South Carolina to pick up another incoming foster.

We asked, David said absolutely, and just like that, another piece of the rescue puzzle fell into place.

David, thank you for jumping in wherever you are needed. Whether it’s helping behind the scenes with social media or getting behind the wheel to help one of our dogs, we are incredibly grateful to have you on this team!

And of course, our wonderful transport volunteer, Preston!

If there is one thing we know about Preston, it’s that no dog is getting through a transport without receiving plenty of love, snuggles, and kisses along the way!

Preston genuinely loves being part of these dogs’ journeys. For him, transporting isn’t just getting a dog from one location to another. It’s getting to spend a little time loving on a dog who is on the way to a better life.

Preston, thank you for always being willing to help, for giving our dogs so much affection along the way, and for being such a wonderful part of our rescue family!

And finally, thank you, Michelle, for opening your home to Merlin and giving her exactly what she needs right now. A peaceful place to recover, a loving person to call her own, and the opportunity to complete her heartworm treatment without the constant excitement of other dogs around her. We know this girl is going to keep you entertained, and we cannot wait to hear all about her Charleston adventures!

Rescue is so much more than taking in a dog and finding it a home. It is coordinating intakes, arranging veterinary care, finding foster homes, organizing transports, adjusting schedules, and sometimes moving three different dogs just to make room for one more.

It truly takes a village, and we are incredibly fortunate to have one of the best villages around.

As Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue continues to grow, so does our incredible team of volunteers. Every new person who steps up allows us to help another dog, take another intake, complete another transport, and give another Weimaraner the second chance they deserve.

Merlin’s journey is a perfect example of what happens when everyone comes together with one common goal: doing what is best for the dogs.

Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue is helping spread the word about a handsome silver gentleman named JoJo who is looking for a new forever home!

Our rescue is currently at capacity and unable to accept additional dogs into our program. Thankfully, JoJo’s family is not facing an emergency rehoming situation and has agreed to allow us to share his information as a courtesy in hopes of finding him the perfect home.

🐾 A LITTLE ABOUT JOJO

JoJo is a purebred silver Weimaraner born April 4, 2018. At 8 years old and approximately 98 pounds, this handsome boy still has plenty of energy, personality, and love to give!

His family describes him as energetic, affectionate, playful, friendly, quirky, and sensitive. He enjoys being with his people and has a wonderful combination of adventure-loving enthusiasm and couch-potato appreciation.

Some of JoJo’s favorite things include hiking, car rides, eating, and taking a well-deserved nap after a busy day. And if you happen to have peanut butter or turkey, you’ve probably just made yourself his favorite person!

JoJo is also a smart boy who knows quite a few commands, including sit, down, paw with both paws, wait, back up, and going to his designated bed or couch. Yes, he even knows the difference between the two!

🏡 HOME LIFE & PERSONALITY

JoJo is completely housebroken and accustomed to having free roam of the house when his family is away. He does well being left alone and reportedly has only minimal separation anxiety.

He previously received crate training but is no longer particularly fond of being crated. At night, he prefers sleeping comfortably on his couch in the living room.

He is excellent in the car, although he prefers standing during the ride so he can supervise the journey!

JoJo has a moderate-to-high energy level and would thrive with someone who enjoys getting outside, hiking, and providing regular exercise.

🐕 OTHER ANIMALS & CHILDREN

JoJo’s future family will need to understand a few important things about him.

While he is affectionate and friendly with people, he is currently not doing well around other dogs and displays leash reactivity toward them. His family reports that he walks beautifully on a leash until another dog enters the picture.

He has been okay with some cats, although certain cats can also trigger a reaction.

JoJo is reportedly good with children, but at 98 pounds, he can be clumsy around little ones. His family is concerned about him accidentally knocking over or injuring their increasingly mobile baby.

For these reasons, we believe JoJo would be best suited for an active, adult household where he can be the only dog, with careful consideration given to any other pets.

His family reports no bite history.

🩺 HEALTH & VETERINARY INFORMATION

According to his family’s submitted profile:

* Neutered male
* Approximately 98 pounds
* Microchipped
* Tail docked
* Reportedly current on vaccinations
* Last veterinary visit: January 15, 2026
* No known health issues or allergies reported
* Currently takes Prozac daily
* Heartworm status unknown
* Not currently receiving monthly heartworm prevention

Prospective adopters should discuss his medication, veterinary history, heartworm testing, and preventative care directly with his family.

❤️ WHY IS JOJO LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME?

JoJo has been loved by his family for nearly eight years, but significant lifestyle changes have made it difficult for them to provide the exercise and activity he needs.

With a young child becoming increasingly mobile, his family is also concerned about JoJo’s size and clumsiness around their baby.

They want to find him a home where he can continue enjoying the active lifestyle he loves while receiving the attention, exercise, and companionship he deserves.

This is not an emergency placement. His family is hoping to find the right home rather than rushing the process.

🏡 JOJO’S IDEAL FOREVER HOME

JoJo would love an active household with adults who have the time and ability to take him hiking, provide daily exercise, and include him in their adventures.

He would especially benefit from someone experienced with Weimaraners who understands their energy, sensitivity, and need for both physical and mental stimulation.

A home without other dogs would be the safest starting point based on his family’s description of his current behavior.

And, of course, a comfortable couch would be greatly appreciated!

Well, we THOUGHT we had Rambo’s transportation all figured out, but apparently the rescue transportation puzzle decided to throw a few extra pieces at us! 😂

We are now in DESPERATE NEED of transportation to get our handsome Foster Rambo from Monroe, NC, to his waiting foster home in Sylva, NC!

Rambo has officially completed his veterinary workup, received the care he needed, and is READY to move on to the next chapter of his rescue journey! His foster family is waiting for him, and we just need some wonderful volunteers to help get him there. 💙

WHY IS THIS TRANSPORT SO URGENT?

Our Foster/Trainer Vicki currently has Rambo at her home, but the rescue revolving door is about to start spinning at full speed!

We have TWO eight-month-old Weimaraners coming into her home as soon as Rambo leaves, followed by TWO MORE bonded boys who also need to come in for their initial evaluations and veterinary care.

That’s FOUR more dogs waiting for their turn!

Getting Rambo to his foster home Wednesday or Thursday would allow us to free up space and prepare for the next round of incoming rescues over the weekend and into next week.

🐾 A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR PASSENGER!

Rambo is a 5-year-old silver Weimaraner who is incredibly sweet, loving, and a little shy.

🚗 He rides well in the car!

🐾 He may pant a little during the ride, but he handles car travel well.

💙 He is sweet and gentle, although he can be timid in unfamiliar situations.

🔒 For his safety, Rambo MUST remain securely leashed and properly restrained during transport. Please use extra caution when opening vehicle doors and during transfers.

🚙 A crate is NOT required! If you don’t have room for one, that’s perfectly fine, provided he can be safely secured in your vehicle.

We would LOVE to find someone who can make the entire trip, but if we have volunteers willing to drive individual legs, our transport coordinator can work on putting together a transport chain!

Today is National Day on Writing, and it has us thinking about all the stories behind the dogs we love.

Some stories begin with a puppy full of mischief. Others begin with a rescue dog getting a second chance at a happy life.

Some chapters are challenging. Others are filled with adventures, laughter, and unforgettable moments.

At Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue, we know a dog's past may be only part of their story. What matters just as much is helping them find the love, stability, and understanding they need for the chapters still ahead.

Many of these poor souls are facing severe respiratory illnesses and medical complications that go far beyond the typical veterinary care we handle in rescue. These organizations are taking on enormous medical expenses just to give these dogs a fighting chance. Right now, these Ohio dogs need the rescue community more than ever. If you can donate, even a few dollars, please do. These rescues have opened their doors and their hearts, and now they need all of us to help them save these lives. Over the past several days, the Weimaraner rescue community has come together in response to the heartbreaking situation involving dozens of Weimaraners in Ohio.

Unfortunately, while Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue was managing a significant number of our own shelter intakes and owner surrenders, we were unable to participate in the Ohio rescue efforts as much as we would have liked. 🐾💙 WELCOME TO RESCUE, RAMBO! 💙🐾

Everyone, please give a big Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue welcome to our newest handsome gentleman, RAMBO! 🥰

This sweet 5-year-old silver Weimaraner officially joined our rescue family on Saturday, and just look at that face! Those big amber eyes and adorable expressions are already stealing hearts!

Rambo is currently spending a few days in Monroe, NC, with our Foster/Trainer Vicki. During his stay, he’ll receive a complete veterinary workup to make sure he’s healthy and ready to safely transition into foster care. We’re also giving him some much-needed time to decompress, settle in, and adjust to all the changes happening in his world.

Once he’s medically cleared and ready, Rambo will head to his foster home in Sylva, North Carolina! 🏡💙

When we put out the urgent call for Rambo, so many wonderful people stepped forward and offered to open their homes. We cannot thank everyone enough for being willing to help this boy!

And that is exactly what rescue is all about. ❤️

🐾 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT FOR RAMBO?

Rambo will spend a minimum of four weeks, or longer if needed, in foster care. This time is incredibly important. He needs the opportunity to decompress, establish a routine, build trust, and let his true personality shine.

We don’t rush our dogs through this process. Every dog adjusts differently, and Rambo deserves whatever time he needs.

🚨 WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING ADOPTION APPLICATIONS FOR RAMBO AT THIS TIME.

Once his evaluation is complete and he’s ready for adoption, his foster family will receive the first opportunity to adopt him. If they decide not to adopt, we will move forward with our established adoption process before opening applications to the public.

For now, there are no applications to submit and no adoption decisions to make. Rambo’s only job is to settle in, feel safe, and enjoy being loved. 💙

❤️🐾 FOSTER COLT’S HEARTWORM TREATMENT UPDATE: ONE INJECTION DOWN!

Our sweet Foster C**t received his first heartworm injection on Saturday, and unfortunately, it really took a toll on our boy.

Saturday was rough, and he spent most of Sunday feeling pretty miserable, too. It wasn’t until Sunday afternoon that he finally started feeling a little more like himself. He ventured outside, found himself a nice sunny spot, and just stood there soaking up the sunshine. Sometimes a little fresh air and sunshine are exactly what a boy needs. ❤️

Now comes 30 more days of strict kennel rest and activity restrictions before C**t returns for his final two heartworm injections. After those, he’ll still need his recovery period and veterinary clearance before he can finally begin his forever-home journey!

The one thing we’ve learned about C**t throughout this entire process is that as long as he has his humans, he can handle just about anything.

This is a dog who once lived his entire life outside, barely knowing human affection. Now? He absolutely LOVES being with his people. He doesn’t need toys, adventures, or excitement. Just knowing his humans are nearby makes his whole world better.

And since playing is off the table, TWR alum Phoebe and his beloved foster brother Fatty McFatterson have stepped up to provide some moral support. 😂

Just look at these three! C**t may be the patient, but apparently he has hired himself a full-time emotional support committee.

We’re so proud of how far this sweet boy has come, and while watching him feel so poorly this weekend was heartbreaking, we’re one step closer to getting him healthy.

Hang in there, C**t. You’ve already survived the hardest chapter of your life. Now we’re working on making sure the rest of your story is filled with love. ❤️🐾

When you welcome a Weimaraner into your life, you're not just bringing home a dog. You're opening the door to a friendship filled with loyalty, laughter, adventure, and maybe a little mischief along the way.

For rescue dogs, making new friends can be especially meaningful. A new person, a patient foster family, or another friendly dog can help them build confidence and learn that wonderful things are still ahead.

Of course, every Weim has their own personality. Some are instant social butterflies, while others need a little extra time and patience before showing their true selves.
