I take pride in taking my time with horses. I’m on the horses clock. Not mine. If it takes another day, week, or month, I will do it for the horse. Some horses do pick it up quick and easy, others don’t. Any horse can be “broke” in 30 or 60 days. That doesn’t mean the horse trusts you. Those horses typically only do what you ask out of fear of what happens if they do not listen and blow up shortly after being send home to people that can’t handle them. If you take the time to work with them on the ground and get their mind focused on you and trust in you, it’s amazing what you can accomplish. Then teaching the owners along the way.

This mustang, Koda, came to me the first week of June. He was rescued from a terrible home by a young lady, who then sold him to Kimberly Ann when he was healthy again. We all knew someone had put a little work into him on the ground. As far as riding, we had no idea what had been done. He is your “typical” mustang. He is stubborn and flighty.

After 2 and 1/2 weeks, I felt he was finally ready for me to step up on his back. I wasn’t sure how he would react. But, all the work I did with him on the ground payed off. He trusted me to get on his back. He immediately tensed then eased up when he realized I’m not going to hurt him. He moved forward and waited for guidance rather than blowing up and letting me hang from the rafters. This mustang is going to make a great horse!

Always listen to what the horse has to say. Correct them when needed but most of all, let them think and process. Guide them down the right path. Don’t force it. Watch how your horse changes into something great!

I’m a big believer in “when the horse does exactly what you want without a fuss, get off and remove the saddle.” It’s important for the young ones to understand pressure and release. The faster they learn that, the more easily you can teach them new maneuvers.

Dexter did amazing today and did everything I asked. I reward with lots of pats and removing the saddle as soon as I step off. This guy is going to make an amazing show pony!

Successful trainers can read a horse and its personality.

They know how to earn trust and respect. They understand how much pressure they can apply without causing regression in the training.

Horses are similar to people.

Sometimes you can ask an individual to do a task and they willing do it. Other times an individual has to be pushed to do a task. Some can handle being scolded and some shut down if you raise your voice at them.

Same concept.

Learn to read the animal if you want to have success training.

"A lot of what I do with training horses is asking them to be accountable, and I just stay out of their way. But in order to make them accountable, we first have to be accountable for our own moves and actions. Often times we are so busy making the horse be correct, but what about the rider? If you are going to train a horse, then train them to do their job and stay out of their way." — Kari Brough

We are always looking for balance in our training.

Asking a horse to be soft and open in the ribs, but not too bendy.

Asking a horse to bring its shoulders through the turn, but not to be too flat or get bracey.

Asking a horse to run hard, but respect when we ask them to slow down.

Too much of one thing is a problem and not enough of another is a problem.

Learn where the holes are in the horse’s and the trainer’s program.

Work to correct them and have balance in the training.

Making sure they are broke enough to help them without nit-picking so much you take what’s good out of them.

It’s a never ending puzzle and the pieces are always changing.
