🐾🚪 Training Tip: Doorway Manners! 🐾

Does your Labrador think every open door is an invitation to charge through? šŸ˜‚

Teaching doorway manners is about more than just good behavior—it’s about safety, patience, and self-control!

Whether you’re heading outside, getting out of the car, or walking into a store, your dog should learn to pause and wait for permission before moving forward.

Start small! Ask your pup to wait, slowly open the door, and reward them for staying calm. If they rush forward, simply close the door and try again.

🐾 Remember: An open door is NOT an automatic invitation!

A few minutes of practice each day can create a lifetime of safer, more enjoyable outings with your best friend. ā¤ļø

🐾 Training Tip Fun– DROP IT! 🐾

ā€œDrop Itā€ is more than just a fun trick—it can be a lifesaving command!

Whether your Labrador picks up something dangerous, grabs something they shouldn’t have, or is learning to retrieve, having a reliable ā€œDrop Itā€ command is essential!

For our retrievers, this command is especially important when teaching a clean delivery of a bumper or bird without turning it into a game of tug-of-war.

Start with a favorite toy, reward your pup for willingly releasing it, and gradually add distractions. Remember, never chase or punish your dog for having something in their mouth. We want them to trust us and happily give things up!

🐾 A well-trained Labrador isn’t just obedient—they’re safer, more confident, and a joy to work with!

🐾 TRAINING TIP: TEACHING ā€œCENTERā€ 🐾

ā€œCenterā€ may look like a fun trick, but it can actually become an incredibly useful real-life training tool!

The Center command teaches your dog to move between your legs, stay close to you, and most importantly, redirect their attention back to YOU.

Think about all the distractions your dog encounters when you’re out in public—other dogs, new people, children, shopping carts, loud noises, unfamiliar smells and exciting surroundings. Instead of allowing your pup to become overwhelmed, overly excited or fixated on what’s happening around them, Center gives them a familiar place to go and a job to do.

🐾 It brings their focus back to you
🐾 Keeps them physically close and easier to manage
🐾 Helps interrupt fixation on distractions
🐾 Builds confidence in busy environments
🐾 Encourages your dog to check in with you
🐾 Gives you another tool for maintaining control in crowds and public spaces

Start teaching Center at home where distractions are minimal. Once your dog understands the position, slowly increase the difficulty—practice in the yard, driveway, a quiet store or parking lot, and eventually around more people and dogs.

The goal isn’t simply for your dog to stand between your legs. The goal is for ā€œCenterā€ to mean: come close, focus on me, and wait for what I ask you to do next.

Training isn’t only about having a dog that knows commands at home. We want our dogs to learn how to listen when the world around them is more interesting than we are. šŸ’•

A good example of the ā€œleave itā€ command. Sitting at a restaurant and the kid to the table next to us does what kids do…. He started smacking his lips and looking but as soon as I said leave it… that was the end of it.
