Kelly And Her Little Orphan Foster Kittens

If you’re in the Chicagoland area & have been considering becoming a kitten foster… this might be the time to take action. We have a fellow foster who is trying to get her neighborhood cats spay/neutered to stop the cycle of kittens being born. She has an uncooperative neighbor that is making this very difficult & the cycle has continued. She has a house full of cats because of this. She’s compassionate & has done all she can for this group of cats. She cannot possibly bring any more in & it’s breaking her heart. While she can’t take them in, she is willing to set a foster up with the things necessary to take this little trio.

In addition, the last time she saw the mother cat was weeks ago & she looked very unwell. She fears that mom may have been poisoned & doesn’t want the kittens to meet that same fate. Therefore, time is of the essence. If anyone is willing to take them in, naws will pay for all of their vetting. You’ll just set up the tower in your home, feed them, scoop their box, bring them to their appointments & most importantly… socialize them. Take these little outdoor critters that have had minimal interaction with humans & interact with them & love on them.

NAWS Humane Society of Illinois has an amazingly supportive community of volunteers & fosters who support one another. We’re all a team & even if you have little or no fostering experience… we will work with you to make sure your questions are answered. If you have specific hesitations, reach out. Maybe we can overcome them. There are other cats/kittens that NAWS is actively trying to find fosters for. There are a pair of newly weaned former bottle babies around 7 weeks old. There is a single long haired tabby girl. Looks to be around 10 weeks or so based on the photo I have but we need to get her out of animal control to know for sure. She’s stuck there because there are no available fosters. We have a very young mama cat (less than a year old) with a single kitten who is about 7ish weeks. White with black spots, mom & baby girl are almost identical. Those are just some of the kittens that are desperately in need of a foster asap.

You get a message… this kitten is sitting at Chicago animal control and its euthanasia deadline is 5 minutes away. None of the rescues in the entire Chicagoland area are able to take him. You kind of have your hands full but know that a couple of kittens will be headed to start their forever through adoption soon. Ugh. Can you live with yourself if you say no & he’s euthanized?

Anyone remember Oompa Loompa?

A while back I picked up a kitten from Animal Control. A gray male with a fractured spine. He was a lil guy & I thought he would be special needs & hang out with Keke.

I got him home & he was far too active for Keke. His broken back wasn’t stopping him from living his best kitten life. I asked for help naming him & ended up calling him “Oompa Loompa”. It’s been several weeks. Oompa Loompa had his final X-rays & was declared a healed man! Everything healed exactly as we hoped it would. He had his neuter surgery yesterday & will be available for adoption soon!

Until then, he’s hanging out here with me & Leafy & all of our other misfit kitties, recovering from surgery. If anyone is interested in knowing more about Oompa Loompa or is interested in meeting him to potentially adopt him… reach out to me. He gets along with other cats/kittens of all ages. He eats wet & dry kitten food. He’s good with kids. He hasn’t been introduced to dogs but I think with his outgoing nature, he would probably like them very much with the right introduction. He needs a friend/friends. He is very energetic & super playful. He will be an excellent kitten for someone who has another pet that is looking for a high energy friend to play with. On the scale of snuggly to playful, he’s about 30% snuggly, 70% playful. 100% handsome😍

It’s Leaf. Aka Leafy. Aka Fuzzy Butt.

The time has come to prepare my heart for the fact that this baby kitty is the right age & size for his neuter surgery & adoption. At times he makes me a little crazy & I feel like it’s time for him to go on & git 😆 At other times, my chin quivers at the idea that he won’t be here beside me the next time I need a floofy little baby hug. But regardless of how I feel, it’s not about me. There’s a “forever” out there waiting for this sweet boy & it’s time for him to start it.

I’m struggling with his coloring. I truly am not completely sure what color this kitten is. He’s black. But there are a couple of white patches that the bikini area & on his neck. His tail is mostly sort of long silver fur. And there are areas of a black/gray mix.

Anyone have any opinions on what color Leaf we have here?

Help me name these babies❤️

8 kittens were found last night in an alley in Chicago. They were various ages & abandoned there in 2 boxes. Dumped.

I really don’t have room for more kittens. I didn’t plan to take more. But one of the kittens wouldn’t eat & the finder was becoming frantic. She was begging & crying & didn’t know what to do. No one else was stepping up (trust me, I’m absolutely sure others weren’t stepping up because they’ve already got full houses with other foster kittens). So. I told her that I would take the struggling one & one sibling to keep it company. I’d take the 2 smallest. Which I did & now they need names.

I believe the little one in a male & the floofy kid is a female. I’m guessing they’re around 3.5 weeks old. So I have some name themes based on dates related to them. I’m going to let you make suggestions based on the themes & then I’ll pick my favorites. Gender neutral are best but not mandatory (because I have been known to misgender floofy kittens). Here are the themes:

1) Christopher Columbus (kittens were found on Columbus Day)

2) Christening (kittens came to me the day after my grandson’s christening)

3) Early December* (they should be ready for adoption around early December) *No Christmas names. Early December.

Ok, pick a theme & give me 2 names that fit the theme.
Example: ‘Christening Theme… Dove & Grace’. That’s it. A theme & 2 names.

Well friends, I haven’t posted for a couple of days because it’s taken me a moment to deal with the emotions of things. I’ve included a video of Leafy comforting me through another painful loss.

Before Han Solo even got here, I made an appointment with the vet to see him the next day. She & I made a plan to figure out what was going on & develop a treatment plan. I came equipped with my notebooks, ready to find out what I needed to do for him & what additional tests I’d need to set up & what meds he would be on how to administer them & what things I needed to keep track of allllll of the things that I would do for him as his medical foster.

I got to the vet & the techs there had worked with Han in previous weeks. They were shocked at his behavior. They said that he was snuggly & friendly. But here we were & he was hissing & growling. That was very concerning for them. The vet decided to do an X-ray & ultrasound to see what we were dealing with. She had to sedate him for the tests. She did the X-ray & told me that things looked very abnormal. Then I watched as she did the ultrasound. It was a mess. The kidneys didn’t even look like kidneys. They were just large lumpy masses. The vet told me that this was a congenital defect. The kidneys were not functional. And there was no treatment that could be given to make them functional. They were not compatible with life. The decision was made to humanely & compassionately euthanize him.

Now let me tell you why this pi**es me off. Han came from a colony of cats in a trailer park. When people feed these cats & do not have them spayed/neutered… they reproduce. And then the male kittens impregnate their mothers & sisters. And then they impregnant their own offspring. What do you think happens when a female becomes pregnant by her own son, and then that same son impregnates the kittens that are a product of that litter? They’re in**ed. And you know what happens to these in**ed kittens? They are born with congenital defects.

We are rescuers. We set our lives aside to save the kittens that are born due to irresponsible humans who can’t take an afternoon & $50 to have a cat altered. We are the ones who take the premature kittens that the young mothers abandon because they don’t have motherly instincts yet. The ones found in the mud. Covered in fleas. Maggots crawling into every available or***ce & eating the kittens from the inside. We see so much suffering because these kittens & their parents have been failed by humans. The person feeding these cats gets to pet them & toss them some kibble. They don’t deal with the aftermath. I do. And all of the other rescuers do. And Han Solo’s foster, Christie, is completely heartbroken because she tried to save this sweet kitten. And all of the love in the world that she had for him was not enough to save him. Because of the people who are allowing the cats to keep reproducing & inbreeding. It has to stop.

Spay or neuter a cat in Han Solo’s name. If the cat is on your property, you have the right to have it altered. Google “TNR”. There are people who will help walk you through the process. Please. Just one cat. If we each alter one cat, collectively we will save thousands of these kittens from ending up like Han. I beg of you. We can’t fix the entire problem, but we can put a dent in it if we each say “yes, I want to be a part of the solution”.

Meet Han Solo, our newest medical needs kitten…

Han was found abandoned as a neonate bottle baby with 2 siblings in a trailer park. Dirty & full of fleas, as you would expect. The 3 kittens were cleaned up by a couple of us & vaccinated & I brought them home with me. I had posted that we were in need of bottle feeding fosters & one of our previous fosters stepped forward to take them.

I don’t recall the exact time frame but weeks later, a wave of Giardia hit our kittens. Unfortunately, Han’s siblings Luke Skywalker & Princess Leia were lost to it. Han became a singleton.

Fast forward & Han went in to be neutered. During the vet exam prior to his surgery, it was discovered that there was some problem with one of his kidneys & he needed further testing. And here we are.

Now that he’s a medical kitty, he’s found his way back to me where he started. We have an appointment with the vet tomorrow to come up with a plan. Kidneys are one thing I’ve never encountered as a medical foster. So the vet will give me guidance & I’ll treat & take him for future tests & whatnot. I’m excited to help him get well, but it’s not all excitement for me…

If you ask anyone who knows me - “what are the 2 types of cats that Kelly won’t foster?” The answer is 1) Adult cats 2) Spicy kittens. Guess what. See the video of Han😑 I really hope it’s just nervousness & that he doesn’t try to rearrange my face with his claws😩 I’ll check in with updates on our journey to help Han!

I think we could all use a little smile. I have one single resident cat that belongs to me. His name is Silver. And he’s helped me raise lots of little orphan kitties, so I call him “Uncle Silver”. He’s the uncle to all of the kittens. Silver is also the most calm, sweet, easy going cat. And while he’s a BIG BIG boy (he was born prematurely & was my first bottle baby at 64 grams… now he’s giant) he doesn’t realize it. He gets bullied sometimes.

So enjoy our current situation. Little Leafy has been bullying Uncle Silver around, it seems 🤭

And in other news, we have a new medical needs kitten joining us this evening. His name is Han Solo & he’s having a kidney issue. We don’t know exactly what the issue is, but we’re gonna find out. I’ll introduce him soon❤️

The sun is not yet up but bottle babies need bottle feeding. So I’m up. The baby kitties are back to sleep & I’m hanging out with another one of my foster kids. This little gray fella with the gray eyes is named Oompa Loompa. And he will be heading for the adoption floor in about a month. Let me tell you about this guy.

After I got Keke, I was keeping my eye out for another special needs kitten her size. She was all alone & I felt that she could benefit from having a buddy. And then I saw Oompa Loompa at Chicago Animal Control. He was found as a stray, he was Keke’s size & he had a fractured spine. They sent me a video of him walking & both legs gave out & he was dragging them with his front paws. So with the blessing of NAWS, I was able to have him transferred over & took him in as my foster.

Turns out this guy did in fact have a fracture, but he showed very little outward appearance of it. And within days he was jumping & climbing. And he hasn’t stopped! He’s been here for probably a month now. And he is ACTIVE! Whatever home he goes to will need to have a playmate for him. He loves people & is always near me when he stops moving. But he’s not crazy cuddly like Leaf. He will take all the pets & love but only if you ask for it. He’s on call❤️

Oompa Loompa’s spine is healing nicely. He’s going back next week for what should be his final X-rays to confirm that he’s healed. Some active household is going to be blessed to have this guy. Did I mention that I may be the titleholder for most foster kittens adopted by other foster parents?😂 They don’t adopt their own foster kittens… they adopt mine. I’m bragging, I think the number is in the double digits though. They joke that I put some kind of magical dust on my kittens. They’re always really affectionate & well socialized. It’s not magic dust. It’s me over here incorporating them into everything I do. Two of them “helped me” feed the bottle babies yesterday. They sit in my lap & watch. If I had a social life, it would be different😆 But I move at a glacial pace around here whenever I can. Lots of kitten attention.
