Timing is important! One thing we care deeply about in our program is allowing our dogs time to fully grow and mature before being spayed or neutered. Hormones do a lot more than affect reproduction — they also play a huge role in bone growth, joint development, muscle tone, coat quality, metabolism, and overall maturity.
When dogs are altered too early, those hormones are removed before the body finishes developing the way it was designed to. One of the biggest concerns is delayed growth plate closure, which can affect structure and increase the risk of joint and orthopedic issues later in life.
That’s why our health guarantee requires waiting until at least 12 months of age before altering, unless it’s medically necessary. It’s not because we’re against spaying or neutering — we simply believe proper development matters.
Of course, every dog is different, and we always encourage families to work closely with their veterinarian. But it’s also okay to ask questions, do your research, and advocate for what’s best for your dog long-term.
