Like so many of you, it was a rough summer. We were feeding up until the first week of August, when we finally got rain. A few small showers in July had, thankfully, kept the grass from going dormant. So, with the grass “poised” and 90+ degree days, we could almost see the grass grow. We now have winter feed and the calves have made some major strides! So very thankful.

"USMARC just released new research regarding breed-specific heterosis for growth and carcass traits in 18 United States cattle breeds, and Gelbvieh-sired females were the only Bos ta**us females with a maternal weaning weight advantage. The data revealed that Gelbvieh-influenced females had a maternal weaning weight advantage of 22.7 pounds."

On our way to the CGA meeting on Saturday morning, this was in our west pasture! This is a not a normal thing to see, but with the drought in the mountains, the bears and other animals are hungry and definitely expanding their range! It’s been “one of those summers,” but we have had some rain - finally! Grass is greening up and starting to see some growth. Meanwhile, we are still feeding and moving cattle regularly. In a normal summer with good grazing, they would turn up their nose to protein cake. But, they still come to that cake wagon when it shows up!

It’s always amazing what you can see at times! We often see ducks but never one all by itself, seemingly completely content, swimming around a stock tank!
