Finish the Recall | Building Better Dogs

A recall is not complete until your dog reaches you and can be handled calmly. Practice in a secure area with a long line attached. Give the recall cue once, move backward to invite your dog toward you, and mark the arrival with “Yes.”

Gently touch or hold the collar, pause one second, and deliver the reward while your dog remains close. Then use “Free” to end the exercise. This helps prevent the habit of grabbing the treat and immediately darting away.

Keep collar handling comfortable and never scold your dog after they return.
