I don’t think people truly understand why pet sitters charge what we charge.
When you see “$30 for a 30-minute visit,” it’s easy to think we’re making $60 an hour.
We’re not. That 30-minute visit doesn’t include the time it takes to drive to your house, drive to the next client, pay for the gas to get there, answer messages, schedule visits, send updates, keep records, or run an actual business.
And unlike a normal job, we don’t go to one place for 8 hours and clock out.
Our entire day is broken into pieces.
We’re up early for morning visits. We’re back out in the middle of the day. We’re working around dinner. We’re doing late-night visits. Then we wake up and do it all over again. Weekends? Usually our busiest days. Holidays? We’re working.
Summer vacations, spring break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s? Those are the exact times everyone else gets to travel and spend time with their families , which means we’re taking care of their pets. There are days we eat in our cars because there isn’t enough time to go home. Days we drive all over town. Days our plans change because a client’s flight was delayed. Days we miss things with our own families because someone else’s animals are depending on us.
And you’re not paying someone just to “feed the dog.” You’re trusting someone with your home, your keys, your alarm codes, and most importantly, animals that are part of your family. We’re responsible for medications, special diets, senior pets, anxious pets, accidents, walks, litter boxes, cleaning messes, noticing when something isn’t right, making sure gates and doors are secure, and knowing what to do if there’s an emergency. Professional sitters also pay for gas, vehicle maintenance, insurance, bonding, licensing, taxes, supplies, and everything else that comes with running a legitimate business. So no, you’re not paying $30 for someone to scoop food into a bowl for 30 minutes. You’re paying for reliability. You’re paying for experience. You’re paying for responsibility. You’re paying for someone who rearranges their entire day around your animals so YOU don’t have to rearrange yours.
And most importantly, you’re paying for the peace of mind of being able to leave town, go to work, enjoy your vacation, or spend the holidays with your family knowing someone dependable is showing up for your babies when you can’t.
That is what you’re paying for. 🐾❤️
