Every donation truly makes a difference. Whether itโ€™s $5, $10, $20, or simply sharing this post, every bit helps us continue providing medical care to cats in need and spaying and neutering cats throughout our community.

๐Ÿพ Want to help cats but trapping and TNR aren't your thing? There are SO many other ways you can make a difference! โค๏ธ

You don't have to be the person setting traps to be part of the solution.

Here are just a few ways you can help:

๐ŸŽ Start a pet food pantry
There are SO many hungry mouths to feed! You can start one independently or work through a rescue or shelter. And remember, some people may need help getting food delivered. A bag of food can make an enormous difference to a family trying to keep their pets or colony fed.

โค๏ธ Provide respite care
There are many reasons a kitty may temporarily need somewhere safe to stay. Life happens. People lose jobs, have emergencies, face housing changes, or simply go through difficult seasons. The goal should be to support people through those rough times so they can keep their pets whenever possible. Reducing abandonment should always be part of the goal.

๐Ÿฑ Be a colony caretaker
TNR programs often care for cats at many different locations, so they can always use extra hands! If you donโ€™t want to take on a colony full-time, you can offer to step in when the primary caretaker is unavailable.

๐Ÿ  Be a foster
Every shelter and rescue could use more foster homes. Fostering opens space and gives cats a safe place to land while they wait for their forever home. If you want to foster independently, you certainly can, but please ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ of proper veterinary care, especially spay/neuter.

๐Ÿš— Transport
Sometimes someone is willing to help a cat but simply has no way to get that cat where they need to go. You can help by providing transportation to and from a spay/neuter appointment, shelter, rescue holding location, or veterinarian.

๐Ÿ›– Build winter shelters
Want to help community cats but don't want to trap? Build shelters! Building one may feel like a lot of work, but once you streamline the process and start making several, it becomes much easier. And those shelters can provide ๐™ก๐™ž๐™›๐™š๐™จ๐™–๐™ซ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™š๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ when temperatures drop.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Advocate
This one costs you absolutely nothing! Share posts. Make your own posts. Educate your friends and family. Start your own page. Use your voice to spread accurate information and help connect people with resources.

There is no single way to help. Maybe you can't trap. Maybe you can't foster. Maybe you don't have the time or resources to take a cat into your home. But there is almost certainly ๐™จ๐™ค๐™ข๐™š๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ you ๐—–๐—”๐—ก do. ๐Ÿพ

โš ๏ธ๐Ÿฑ PSA: CATS, KITTENS & COLLARS โ€” PLEASE READ! ๐Ÿฑโš ๏ธ

We had a SNAP kitten come into the clinic to be spayed wearing a beautiful little green velvet collar. It was a very stout collar with a metal buckle.

It looked adorable.

But it could have been a death sentence.

I took the collar off, buckled it, and gave that buckle several REALLY hard tugs.

It did NOT break away.

After three decades in rescue, I can tell you some horror stories about cats and collars. Personally, I am not a fan of putting anything around a kitten or catโ€™s neck.

Cats climb. They squeeze through fences. They crawl under things. They jump into trees. They get into places we couldnโ€™t imagine them getting into.

A collar can become caught on a branch, fence, crate, piece of furniture, or any number of things. A frightened cat doesnโ€™t calmly wait for someone to come help. They panic, twist, pull and fight to get loose.

And if that collar doesnโ€™t release, the outcome can be horrific.

โš ๏ธ IF YOU MUST PUT A COLLAR ON YOUR CAT, PLEASE USE ONLY A TRUE BREAKAWAY COLLAR. โš ๏ธ

And donโ€™t just trust the package because it says โ€œbreakaway.โ€

TEST IT YOURSELF.

Buckle it and pull it apart with your own hands BEFORE you ever put it around your catโ€™s neck. It should release under firm pressure. If that buckle wonโ€™t come apart, think about what could happen if your cat were hanging from it.

I learned firsthand just how important this is.

I have a barn cat who LOVES to roam. Because he hunts critters along our private gravel road at night, I wanted him to be more visible, so I kept putting reflective breakaway collars on him.

That cat lost at least a DOZEN collars. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

I finally gave up replacing them.

Then one night, I spotted him way up in a tree in my orchard. I shined a flashlight up there to see what the heck he was doing.

I found my catโ€ฆ

AND AT LEAST HALF A DOZEN OF HIS REFLECTIVE COLLARS HANGING IN VARIOUS TREES! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Those collars werenโ€™t failures.

THEY DID EXACTLY WHAT THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO DO.

Every one of those collars represented a time he potentially got caught on something and the collar released from his neck.

Now imagine if I had put a heavy-duty collar with a metal buckle on him that wouldnโ€™t let go.

That thought still makes my stomach turn.

โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ THIS IS ALSO WHY WE MICROCHIP OUR CATS AND KITTENS.

A collar and tag can be lostโ€”and in the case of a breakaway collar, sometimes we WANT that collar to come off if it means saving the catโ€™s life.

A microchip provides permanent identification that stays with your cat and can help get them home if theyโ€™re ever lost. Just remember that the chip needs to be registered and your contact information kept current.

So please:

๐Ÿฑ If your cat doesnโ€™t need a collar, consider going without one.

๐Ÿฑ If you choose to use one, BREAKAWAY ONLY.

๐Ÿฑ Test the buckle yourself before putting it on your cat.

๐Ÿฑ And MICROCHIP YOUR CAT and keep that registration information updated.

A pretty collar isnโ€™t worth your catโ€™s life.

If it canโ€™t break away, donโ€™t put it on your cat. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ Help Us Save Lives & Reduce the Cat Population ๐Ÿพ
Missoula AdvoCats needs our communityโ€™s help! Every donation to our medical and spay/neuter funds allows us to continue providing critical care to cats in need while working to reduce the overpopulation of cats throughout Missoula County and surrounding areas.
Your donations help cover emergency medical care, medications, vaccinations, spay and neuter surgeries, and our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) efforts for community and feral cats. Every cat we are able to spay or neuter means fewer unwanted litters and fewer cats struggling to survive outside.
No donation is too smallโ€”every $5, $10, or $20 adds up and makes a real difference. โค๏ธ
