Spent the weekend checking out some new terrain and came home with a few new trees.

There’s something especially rewarding about finding material in the landscape—studying the movement, age, character, and possibilities that nature has already built into each tree. These are still very much at the beginning of their bonsai journey, but there’s some exciting potential here.

For now, the priority is recovery, establishing strong roots, and giving them plenty of time before any serious styling begins.

A good weekend in the mountains, a dirty truck, and a few future bonsai. Hard to complain.

No matter how you cut it. Our National Parks are not replaceable once they are gone. Vote for someone who enjoys our national parks. Someone who treasures them. Someone who has hiked them.
Because I guarantee that person is great.

Boxwood bonsai have such a quiet strength to them.

This one has a rugged old trunk, exposed roots, and tight little clouds of foliage that give it a really aged, collected feel. Boxwoods are great material for bonsai because they backbud well, tolerate pruning, and can slowly be refined into dense, compact pads over time.
This tree is still a work in progress, like most bonsai are, but that’s part of what makes it fun. Every season is another chance to shape, refine, and learn from the tree.

Simple. Sturdy. Full of character.
