It’s close to that time of year again please make sure your dogs tags are updated and you have them on your pets! July 4th is the highest shelter intake holiday of the year. And it starts before, during an after the 4th as people are personally using their own fireworks as well. A simple updated tag can go along way. Whether it’s your dog or you finding somebody’s dog.

It's important for dog parents to ensure pups have updated ID tags and collars, especially before July 4th, to keep pets from going missing.

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU 🚫CAN'T SPREAD COLD WATER WITH AN OVERHEATED DOG OR PUT A WET TOWEL ON ITS BACK?! ⬇️ HERE'S THE INSTRUCTION OF WHAT YOU SHOULD DO. ⬇️

Animal lovers, never make the mistake of pouring cold water overheated dog or putting a wet towel on its back. You will see the opposite effect.

Due to cold, the veins contract and due to high temperatures (above 42 degrees), the proteins in the blood collide, causing the blood to become thick and tight.

Due to the combination of these two factors, blood stops entering the heart and organs fail one by one due to lack of oxygen.

The result is a very slow but very painful death.

If you try to help an overheated dog in this way, it will die anyway.

First give him lukewarm water to drink, then cool his feet and chest/belly with a wet towel. Then put the dog in the shade on a wet towel!!!

Sharing is highly desirable because time and time again we see footage of overheated dogs exiting a car with water spilled on their backs.

Paw pad burns can be prevented by avoiding extreme weather conditions. Check surface temperatures before walking your dog. Hot pavement should be avoided. Keep outside walks to a minimum during extreme weather.

As summer temperatures continue to soar, pet parents must pay even closer attention to their pet’s needs. In addition to making sure they are staying hydrated and being kept cool, it’s essential to look out for paw pad burns on your dog or cat whenever your pet is let outside.

July 4th tips to keep pets safe:
Keep your pet inside, have music or the television on, and create a safe place for them to hide if they choose. Pet owners with dogs should give them a chew toy. You can also use calming shirts, "Rescue Remedy" drops, and other calming items.
Make sure pets have ID tags and microchips make sure dogs are wearing an ID tag with your contact information. Owners should also make sure their pet is microchipped — and double-check that the microchip is up to date. “Check that your pet’s microchip is registered and contains the correct name and your current phone number and address, otherwise there’s no easy way to reach you if they’re found," the foundation said in a statement.

Avoid leaving pets in cars:
If you’re planning to enjoy a fireworks celebration, it’s important not to leave your pet in a parked car, particularly at night during fireworks displays. Instead, it’s recommended to create a safe, cool quiet place like a bathroom for your pet to relax instead of a space like a crate.

Leave your pets at home:
PETA stresses for owners to never bring animals along to watch fireworks displays. Instead, leave them at home indoors and never have them tethered or chained outside. “They can hang themselves if they leap over a fence while trying to run from the noise. Animals can also injure themselves while trying to climb out of pens," the nonprofit said in a statement.

Tire your pets out before fireworks celebrations: If it’s cool enough outside on July Fourth weekend, PETA recommends taking dogs for a long walk or to play at a dog park before the fireworks begin in an effort to help tire them out.

Try a calming aid:
"To animals, fireworks really do sound like ‘bombs bursting in air,’" PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement. To help reduce a pet’s stress and anxiety from the noise, there are a variety of medications and supplements that can help. Owners should contact their veterinarian early to determine which is best — as every pet and situation is different.

Wrap your pets up:
Michelson Found Animals Foundation says that confining movement in dogs and cats actually has a calming effect on them. There are anti-anxiety wraps or coats made for animals — or even a scarf can get the job done in a pinch.

Check the locks:
Prior to any fireworks display, make sure doors, gates and windows are all closed to help muzzle the loud sounds and prevent an escape.

Keep festivities out of reach:
Never leave alcoholic drinks unattended where pets can reach them, as those drinks have the potential to poison animals, according to the ASPCA. The same goes for citronella candles, insect coils and tiki torch oil products — as well as glow jewelry, which contains a luminescent substance that is highly toxic.

It's coming close to that time of year. Please be mindful of all the things you can do to mitigate the stress and possible escape of your pets during this holiday. This time of year is the highest entry of shelter animals from fireworks. In LA we are used to folks getting personal fireworks and using them before, during and after July 4th. Here are some really helpful tips for this time of year and for July 4th. Please share to all of your petowner friends. 🐾

The sound of fireworks may scare your pet so much that they run off and potentially go missing, something the American Kennel Club says tends to happen during the holiday break.
