🐾 Looking to add a small dog to your family? Now is the perfect time! 🐾

We currently have 15 small breed dogs looking for new homes, including 2-year-old Poochies.

If you've been thinking about adopting a small dog, don't wait: these little companions are sure to find homes quickly!

As part of our June adoption special, all dogs older than 6 months have an adoption fee of just $25 through the end of the month. All adopted dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and ready to start their next adventure with you.

View all of our available dogs and submit an application online at HSSJC.org, or stop by the shelter during adoption visitation hours from 2:00–4:30 PM, Monday through Saturday to meet them in person.

We're thrilled to share that Chicago Is So Two Years Ago has found her forever family! 🎉

After arriving as a stray in September, she became one of our longest-term residents and was the second-longest stay cat in our care. Since moving to The Cat Lady Cafe in November, she patiently watched many of her feline friends head home while she continued waiting for her own special person.

That wait is finally over!

A huge thank you to Jim and his family for opening their hearts and home to this wonderful cat. We'd also like to thank Kim and the entire team at the Cat Lady Café for taking such great care of her, sharing her story, and helping her find her purrfect match.

Happy tails, Chicago! We can't wait to hear about all the adventures ahead in your new home. ❤️🐾

Boots has a very important message!

Due to last night's storms, the Humane Society of St. Joseph County is currently without phone and internet service.

Our lobby will remain open during normal business hours (8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.); however, some services may be limited until connectivity is restored.

For animal control emergencies within St. Joseph County (excluding South Bend City), please call 574-255-4726 ext. 8 to be connected to our emergency cellphone.

🐾 Pet Safety Reminder: If your area experienced strong winds or storm damage, please take a few moments to inspect your fences, gates, and outdoor enclosures for damage before letting pets outside. Storms can create gaps or weak spots that may lead to accidental escapes. Ensuring your pets are wearing identification tags and have current microchip information can also help reunite them quickly if they become lost.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through these service disruptions and will provide updates as soon as service has been restored.

We're excited to partner with Electrical Workers Local 153 for a fun-filled event on Saturday, June 13, from 1–4 PM.

This family-friendly event is packed with fun for pets and people alike, including pet-themed vendors, an agility course, a pet costume contest, and more; all while supporting the Humane Society of St. Joseph County.

Be sure to stop by our booth where we'll have:

• Adoptable dogs looking for loving homes
• Giveaway items
• Pet care resources and community information
• Friendly staff and volunteers ready to answer your questions

🚨 Shelter Closure Notice🚨

Ichabod Crane, our June "Dog of the Month", wanted to let everyone know that the shelter will be closed tomorrow, June 11, for our monthly staff training and deep cleaning day.

If you have an animal emergency and need assistance during the closure, please call our emergency line at 574-255-4726 ext. 8.

While the shelter is closed, you can still browse Ichabod and all of his adoptable friends online anytime at humanesocietystjc.org/adopt.

Better yet, June is the perfect time to find your next adventure buddy! Through our Summer Road Trip Ready adoption special, all dogs and cats older than 6 months - including Ichabod - have a reduced adoption fee of just $25 through the end of June.

Applications can be submitted online at any time, and our staff will follow up to schedule meet-and-greets once we reopen.

Cooperstown, our resident spokescat, has a special request this week - and it’s all about keeping things clean and cozy for the pets in our care.

We’re in need of laundry detergent and Tide Pods! 🧺

With 300+ animals currently in our care (and more arriving regularly), the laundry never slows down. From blankets to towels, these essentials help us keep every kennel fresh, comfortable, and ready for snuggles while our animals wait for their forever homes.

If you’re able to help, donations can be dropped off at the shelter, 2506 Grape Road.

Drop-off bins are available outside, or you’re welcome to bring items into the lobby during open hours; Open Monday–Saturday, 8:30 AM–5:30 PM

🌡️ Hot Weather Alert for Pet Safety 🌡️

With heat indexes expected to approach 100 degrees this week, it's more important than ever to take extra precautions to keep pets safe and comfortable.

Never leave pets in vehicles, even with the windows cracked or the air conditioning running. Temperatures inside a car can rise quickly and become deadly in just minutes.

If you're taking your dog for a walk, remember that pavement and sidewalks can become dangerously hot. A good rule of thumb: if it's too hot for the back of your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

We also encourage everyone to avoid setting live traps during extreme heat. Trapped animals can quickly suffer from heat exhaustion and other life-threatening conditions.

Be sure your pets have access to fresh water, shade, and cool places to rest throughout the day. A little extra caution can make a big difference during these hot summer temperatures.

Urgent Need: Canned Pet Food Donations Needed

Right now, we have more than 300 animals in our care, and that number is going to grow throughout the summer. To help keep every pet healthy and well-fed, we are in urgent need of canned cat and dog food donations.

Our shelves are running low, and every donation makes a difference for the animals depending on us each day.

Donations can be dropped off in the collection bins outside the shelter at any time, or you can shop from our wish lists and have items shipped directly to us:
