Summer is quickly approaching, bringing warmer and more humid weather. As such, it is important to raise awareness about heat stroke in pets. ☀️

What is heat stroke? Heat stroke occurs when your pet’s body temperature rises rapidly above normal levels, preventing them from effectively regulating it. If left untreated, it can result in serious health issues such as organ damage, shock, or even death.

Symptoms of heat stroke include a body temperature of 104°F or higher, vomiting and diarrhea (sometimes bloody), heavy panting, seizures or collapse, and bright red gums.

How can you prevent heat stroke? Limit your pet’s time outdoors during hot weather to only a few minutes at a time, ensure access to plenty of cool, fresh water, and provide cooling mats, fans, or shaded, cool areas. Some breeds are more susceptible to heat stroke, particularly brachycephalic breeds such as Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Boxers, Pugs, and Boston Terriers.
