🐾Surviving Puppyhood🐾
Naming commands 🗣️
Once your puppy is consistently and easily being lured into different positions (sit, down, stand, heel, etc.), you can start putting a name to those commands! We had to teach our puppies HOW to get into certain positions before we TELL them what to do.
Grab your leashed puppy and some treats, let’s get to training!
1. Start by luring your puppy, the same as you have been doing. As soon as your puppy get into the desired position, name it! For sit: lure your puppy’s head up, butt hits the floor, “sit”
2. Mark the behavior and reward your puppy. Ex: puppy sits, “yes” and give food reward. *Remember to reward your puppy in position*
3. Release your puppy from position before they choose to get up one their own. After marking and rewarding, give your puppy a release word (ex: “break”) and toss a treat away from you, giving puppy permission to move. This step will come in handy when we start teaching command duration later on!
As you do training sessions with your puppy remember:
-Keep sessions short! 10-15 minutes is enough for their little brains
-It’s okay to make mistakes! Don’t be too hard on yourself, striving for perfection
-Give yourself and your puppy grace! You are both learning new things
-Have fun! New puppies are so exciting, so full of joy. Training with your puppy should be fun
