Scooping off the moldy part doesn’t save the rest of the bag.

So where’s the line between “a little off” & “toss it”?

Start with the nose. Fresh feed smells like feed. Musty, sour, or rancid means it stays out of the feeder.

Other red flags: damp spots, clumps, mold, webbing, beetles, rodent droppings. Heat & humidity can wear feed down, so a bag that’s sat through a hot stretch deserves a closer look.

The full list of signs, plus where feed should live instead 👇

Learn how to store chicken feed properly to protect it from moisture, mold, heat & pests, plus how long feed lasts and signs it has gone bad.

Asking a chicken to choose between grubs & mealworms is like asking a kid to choose between two kinds of candy.

You’ll get an enthusiastic answer. It just won’t be based on nutrition.

Both treats get the flock running, but are they actually doing the same thing once they’re eaten?

Which one has more protein? What about calcium? Is one better suited for laying hens or molt season? And can either replace the oyster shell already sitting in the coop?

Black soldier fly larvae deliver more calcium than mealworms, support molt recovery, & strengthen eggshells. Here's what BSFL are, how the nutrition compares, & how to use them.

Letting a new dog loose in the yard with your flock is kinda like sending your kid onto the highway after one driving lesson because they “seemed pretty comfortable.” One good moment doesn’t mean they’re ready.

Prey drive doesn’t just switch off because your dog seemed calm in the yard yesterday. It takes real supervision and a plan.

Swipe through for the 5 steps we walk every keeper through before trusting a dog around the flock.

Go slow. The goal isn’t friendship, it’s nobody getting hurt.

Tag us if your dog & flock made it work. We want to see the peace treaty in action. 🐔🐕

Ask a chicken keeper what makes their day.

There's a good chance a beautiful egg yolk makes the list. 🥚

If you've ever wondered why yolks range from pale yellow to deep orange, we put together a guide explaining what influences their color and why what goes into the feeder matters.

Pale yolk or deep orange — the difference comes down to what a hen is eating. Here's what feed ingredients and foraging actually do to egg yolk color, and why pale doesn't mean something's wrong.

Hens treat sudden loud noise as a predator alert. The 4th throws that instinct into overdrive.

1️⃣ Lock up before dark. Easier to secure them calm than chase them panicked.
2️⃣ Leave a light on. Softens the flash-to-dark contrast, helps you spot anyone piled in a corner.
3️⃣ Block sightlines to the sky. What they can't see, they panic less about.
4️⃣ Skip the door checks mid-show. Opening it risks a bolt straight into the noise. Use a window or camera instead.
5️⃣ Expect a quiet morning after. Lower appetite, fewer eggs for a day or two. Normal, not a problem.

Hope your flock has a calm one this year.
