Herding behaviour isn’t just seen around livestock 🐑

Breeds like German Shepherds are genetically wired to control movement, which is why you’ll often see circling, chasing, blocking, and directing other dogs during social interactions. To many owners it can look like play, but it’s actually instinct-driven behaviour.

Without proper structure and guidance, herding can become obsessive, over-aroused, or controlling — especially in high-drive working breeds. Understanding breed genetics is key to understanding behaviour.

Separation anxiety is when a dog becomes stressed or panicked when left alone or separated from their owner. This can show through barking, destruction, pacing, whining, or an inability to settle.

Want to understand what dogs are actually saying to each other? Our ebook breaks down canine psychology, body language, pack dynamics, and behaviour in a way most owners have never been taught — helping you read situations before they escalate. Link below ⬇️

In this clip, the Pitbull begins to get overly boisterous, which is where our established Poodle steps in to calm the situation. Notice the posture, stiff tail, eye contact, and physical pressure — all natural forms of canine communication used to create boundaries and restore calm.

This is the value of a balanced pack. Dogs that understand structure often help teach other dogs far more clearly than we ever can.

Submissive behaviour isn’t always calm behaviour.

When a dog repeatedly rolls onto its back in a high-arousal group, it can actually attract more pressure, excitement, and fixation from the other dogs. What many owners see as “sweet” or “submissive” can quickly contribute to tension building within the pack.

In situations like this, we’ll often step in and correct the submissive dog as well, helping to lower the overall arousal and create a calmer, more neutral environment for everyone involved.

Good socialisation is about balance, not just letting dogs “work it out.”

This started as balanced play, but quickly escalated once the brindle dog stopped responding to the beagle’s cues.

Whale eye, teeth baring, and trying to disengage are all signs a dog is becoming uncomfortable. Knowing when to step in is key to preventing conflict and keeping play safe.

Ranger is a reactive German Shepherd who was surrendered to us, and videos like this are a reminder that training isn’t always about waving treats in front of a dog.

Food can absolutely be a useful tool, but real rehabilitation comes from communication, structure, timing, accountability, and building a relationship the dog can trust. Some dogs are too overstimulated, anxious, or environmentally focused to care about food in those moments — especially reactive working breeds like Ranger.
Interestingly, research has shown that many dogs value social interaction and praise just as highly as food rewards.

One study using awake canine fMRI scans found that most dogs showed equal or even greater brain activation for praise compared to food, highlighting how powerful engagement and handler connection can be in training.
