The Louisa County Animal Shelter operates under guidelines of the Commonwealth of Virginia providing humane sheltering, care, adoption, and redemption of stray and surrendered animals. We strive to eliminate pet overpopulation by encouraging spay/neuter of animals, increase the public awareness by educating our citizens on responsible pet ownership, and to prevent any form of animal cruelty. We are a county pound and we must maintain a few open runs for new intakes at all times. When we do fill up we work very hard not to euthanize for space by calling out to adopters and rescues for help.

We are critically full, and our pups need your help!

Below are just a few of our adoptable dogs who are both dog‑friendly and people‑friendly—yet they keep getting overlooked. If you or someone you know is thinking about adopting, now is the perfect time to open your heart and home.

Please stop by the shelter Tuesday–Saturday from 12–5 pm to meet these sweet faces (and so many more!). Your new best friend might be waiting for you.

Do you know anything about us?

"Truth" and "Dare" (orange and white) were recently left inside the Tractor Supply Co., located at 8986 Courthouse Rd., Louisa, VA.

Just a little clarification about stray cats: 🐾 Louisa County Animal Shelter typically only takes in cats who are sick, injured, or in need of shelter intervention (owner surrendering). Since cats are free-roaming animals, healthy community cats are generally best left where they are if they are thriving in their environment. This helps us keep shelter space available for animals who are truly in need of our care.
