I want to start by saying my heart goes out to those who are experiencing loss with the fires. Always remember human life matters more than animal lives, so if you are thinking about putting yourself in a dangerous situation to save an animal do not attempt it. Also evacuate if you are told to. I wanted to send out some information to try to help my animal owners and ranchers in the danger zone and surrounding areas.
This fire is hot enough to cause burns without direct contact to flames. These burns can lead to life threatening secondary infections and fluid loss. Smoke inhalation can also lead to pneumonia, respiratory dysfunction, and secondary infections. For my dog and cat owners please keep your pet’s time outside as short as possible to avoid smoke inhalation. My horse and livestock owners please evacuate before it is too late. Try to move them to areas with less smoke and better air quality. If you have an animal with burns or prolonged smoke exposure experiencing respiratory problems please take them to a veterinarian don’t just think they will get over it as the smoke dies down. Dr. Gates, Dr. Tyler Martin, Dr. Gabby Martin, and I are ready and able to see these patients coming out of the fires at Palo Pinto Vet Clinic in Mineral Wells.
