This juvenile Black-crowned night heron was found grounded below his nest in downtown Milwaukee, an especially peculiar nesting location for the species.
Upon admission, we found that he had Trichomoniasis, a disease caused by a parasite that manifests itself as yellow-white lesions in the mouth and throat of birds. If severe enough, it can inhibit their ability to swallow food, which could become fatal. We immediately started medication for this condition and are happy to report that those lesions responded well to the treatment and completely resolved.
He was then upgraded to his own room to practice fishing for live prey and develop his flight skills before he was successfully released earlier this month! 💚

We have quite a few patients in care with a predilection for fish dishes, and they are eating through a hefty supply of seafood. 🐟 If you've got fresh or frozen fish that you can part with (or need an excuse to clean out the freezer), please consider donating to the animals in care at our wildlife rehabilitation center!
Any raw, unseasoned, and preferably filleted fish would be amazing and so greatly appreciated.

This family of Downy Woodpeckers arrived after their nesting tree was cut down. As North America's smallest woodpecker species, these pint-sized patients spent five weeks in care before being released into a beautiful, wooded area. Though we're sure they'll miss the free mealworm buffet, they immediately took to the trees and excitedly explored their new home. 💚

When a caring family found this juvenile Cooper's Hawk in their yard last summer, grounded and unable to fly, they turned to our Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for help.
Our licensed rehabilitators found singed, burned, and missing feathers across his body and throughout his wings. The intricate structure of these feathers is precisely what gives them the speed and agility they are known for, and in this condition, our patient could barely make it off the ground, much less hunt to survive. He needed time and a safe space to recover and molt before he could survive in the wild. Since Cooper's Hawks typically molt between March and May, he spent nearly a year in our care. From the safety of a large outdoor enclosure, where daylight cycles support feather regrowth on a natural timeline, this young hawk truly transformed. An ever-changing array of enrichment and perches at various heights kept him strong and engaged, while time and the natural rhythms of nature allowed him to make a full recovery and return to the skies.

This young opossum had a rough start in life. She was likely scavenging for food when she was painfully caught in a snap trap intended for rats. We have no way of knowing how long her arm had been trapped, but thankfully, a kind citizen found her and gently freed her from an otherwise certain death.

After six weeks of medication, wound treatment, bandaging, and rest, she made a full recovery, and we were able to successfully release her back into the wild, where she belongs. Though her story has a happy ending, so many wild animals who encounter a trap or poison suffer a far more grim fate. These lethal approaches do not discriminate by species and can have much broader consequences than what the user may have intended.

This adult Canada Goose was found in a parking lot earlier this spring, emaciated and suffering from respiratory issues. Once he was in our care, the UW Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, which assists us throughout the busiest time of year, took X-rays to see what was going on. They found that the goose had been shot, with a pellet lodged in his trachea and one in his abdomen. They quickly devised a plan to remove the pellet in his trachea that was causing him issues and making it hard for him to breathe. ❤️‍🩹

After much thought and preparation, they performed an extensive surgery to remove the section of his trachea that the pellet was in. Our licensed wildlife rehabilitators had to slowly introduce solid food into his diet and administered lead treatment, antibiotics, antifungals, and pain medication to help aid in his recovery. His story doesn't end there, though!

While the goose was still recovering but very stable, we had admitted a gosling to our wildlife hospital who seemed to be habituated, meaning they had lost their fear of humans and would approach them for food or attention. To help remind the gosling that they were indeed a goose, our rehabilitators decided to house the baby with the adult to teach them his ways... and it worked like a charm! The gosling had become the adult's shadow. Wherever the adult was, the gosling was right there beside him. Once the gosling was no longer approaching humans and the adult was given a clean bill of health, the dynamic duo was released near a local waterway where they continued their journey in the wild together! 🪿

We are currently looking to expand our list of safe places to release hand-raised raccoons, opossums, and squirrels. Once these young animals are ready to return to the wild, suitable release locations help give them the best chance to thrive. Our patients and our staff need your help! With more than 300 wild friends in our care right now, we are going through a ton of fresh greens and other goodies.
If you have any of the following that you could part with, we'd be endlessly grateful if you'd bring them to us at 4500 W. Wisconsin Ave. from 9am-4pm.

Currently, our biggest needs are:
• Fresh produce:
🥬 GREENS! – Romaine, leaf lettuce, kale, collards, arugula, chard (please no iceberg lettuce, spinach, or cabbage)
☘️ Wild-picked greens (from pesticide/herbicide-free spaces, please) – dandelions, sorrel, plantain, clover.
• Fresh or Frozen produce:
🫐 Berries of any kind
🍎 Other fruit – melons, apples, oranges, grapes
🥦 Vegetables – broccoli, carrots, green beans, zucchini, sweet potatoes (please NO onions, nightshades, beets, radishes, or turnips)
