This juvenile Black-crowned night heron was found grounded below his nest in downtown Milwaukee, an especially peculiar nesting location for the species.
Upon admission, we found that he had Trichomoniasis, a disease caused by a parasite that manifests itself as yellow-white lesions in the mouth and throat of birds. If severe enough, it can inhibit their ability to swallow food, which could become fatal. We immediately started medication for this condition and are happy to report that those lesions responded well to the treatment and completely resolved.
He was then upgraded to his own room to practice fishing for live prey and develop his flight skills before he was successfully released earlier this month! π
