"But she's still eating."

I hear that all the time when we find significant dental disease.

The truth is, dogs and cats are incredibly good at hiding pain. Most don't stop eating just because their mouths hurt. They adapt.

Some chew on one side. Some swallow kibble without chewing it well. Some stop playing with toys they used to love. And many don't show any obvious signs at all.

That's why dental disease is so easy to underestimate.

One of my favorite parts of veterinary dentistry is seeing pets after treatment. Owners will often tell me, "I had no idea how much better she could feel." Suddenly they're playing more, acting younger, and enjoying things they had quietly stopped doing.

If your pet has bad breath or it's been a while since their last dental evaluation, don't assume everything is fine just because they're still eating. We'd be happy to take a look.

Looking for a fun way to encourage a young reader?

The Dunwoody Library is hosting Read to a Therapy Dog this Saturday from 11:00 AM–12:00 PM for children ages 5–10. Beginning readers can practice reading aloud to a trained therapy dog who loves listening to stories.

It's a wonderful way to help build reading confidence in a calm, encouraging environment—plus, who doesn't love spending time with a friendly dog?

Registration is required, so be sure to contact the Dunwoody Library if you're interested.

Arthritis isn't something we treat once and forget about.

The goal isn't just to reduce pain—it's to help your dog stay active, comfortable, and enjoying the things they love for as long as possible.

As arthritis changes over time, your dog's treatment plan may need to change too. Regular mobility exams give us a chance to evaluate joint comfort, muscle mass, body weight, and any changes you've noticed at home. Sometimes a small adjustment to medications, laser therapy, exercise, or weight management can make a big difference.

Keeping dogs moving comfortably is one of the best ways we can help them enjoy their senior years.

I hear that all the time.

The problem is that dogs are incredibly good at hiding dental pain. Most continue eating even when they have fractured teeth, infected teeth, or significant periodontal disease. They've learned to adapt.

For many owners, bad breath is the first thing they notice. But bad breath usually isn't just "dog breath." It's often a sign of bacteria and infection below the gumline.

One of my favorite parts of veterinary dentistry is seeing how much better many dogs feel afterward. Owners often tell me their pet seems happier, more playful, or interested in toys again. They didn't realize how much chronic dental pain had become part of everyday life until it was gone.

If your dog's breath has gradually gotten worse, or it's been a while since their last dental evaluation, it's worth having us take a look.

This is why dental X-rays matter.

When you look at your pet's teeth, you're only seeing part of the picture.

A large portion of every tooth is hidden below the gumline. Tooth roots, surrounding bone, abscesses, bone loss, tooth resorption, and other painful problems often can't be seen during a routine oral exam.

That's why we take full-mouth dental X-rays during every dental procedure. They allow us to evaluate each tooth completely and make the best decisions for your pet's long-term comfort and oral health.

Some teeth that look bad can actually be healthy below the gumline. Others that look fairly normal on the surface have significant disease hidden underneath. Dental X-rays help us tell the difference.

"I thought he was just getting old."

I hear that a lot. Sometimes it's true. But a lot of the time, what owners are seeing is pain.

Dogs with arthritis usually don't wake up one morning limping. They just start doing a little less. They stop jumping into the car. They don't want to go as far on walks. They take a little longer to get up after a nap. Maybe they don't chase the ball quite as enthusiastically anymore.

Because it happens so gradually, it's easy to think it's just part of aging.

The good news is that we have a lot more options than we did years ago. Depending on the dog, treatment might include weight loss, laser therapy, joint supplements, medications, rehabilitation, or a combination of several things. The goal isn't to make a 12-year-old dog act like they're 2 again. It's to help them stay comfortable and enjoy life.

If your dog has been slowing down, don't automatically assume it's just old age. It may be worth having a conversation with your veterinarian.

Healthy pets need checkups, too.

One of the best parts of my job is helping pets stay healthy—not just treating them when they're sick.

During a wellness exam, I'm looking for much more than whether your pet is due for vaccines. I'm checking eyes, ears, teeth, heart, lungs, skin, joints, weight, and looking for subtle changes that could be the first sign of a developing problem.

Pets are incredibly good at hiding illness. They can't tell us when something feels "a little off," so we rely on careful physical exams, conversations with their families, and, when appropriate, screening tests to catch problems early.

Some of the most important diagnoses I've made happened during routine wellness visits, before the owner had noticed anything wrong at home.

Those are the appointments I love, because finding a problem early often means more treatment options, better outcomes, and a healthier, happier pet.

One of the best things you can do for an arthritic dog isn't a medication.

If a dog has arthritis, carrying even a few extra pounds can make a big difference in how they feel.

Every step puts a little more stress on sore joints. Over time, dogs become less active because they're uncomfortable. They gain weight because they're less active. Then the extra weight makes the arthritis even worse. It becomes a cycle.

The encouraging part is that breaking that cycle doesn't always require dramatic weight loss. Even losing a small amount of weight can improve comfort and mobility.

When we put together an arthritis treatment plan, weight management is often just as important as medications, laser therapy, or joint supplements. Every dog is different, but our goal is always the same—to keep them comfortable and enjoying life for as long as possible.
