I just want to stress that we can’t be condemning operations that are large.
I also want to stress that the term “factory farm” doesn’t hold any weight in the industry for most people. It’s a term used by anti-animal ag activists who use fear-mongering to prevent people from buying meat, or those who want to promote their own business by putting others down.
I’ve been around large operations, and small. I can say that many larger businesses have the management practices, knowledge, experience, and resources to ensure their animals are cared for in the best way. It may not look picture perfect, but their animals aren’t unhealthy and unhappy.
Small businesses can struggle with the aforementioned things. I can vouch as one of them. While I can care for my animals in different ways, I still could use some of the facilities, practices and experts or training that the employees have on larger ranches or farms.
Plus, I can’t employee hundreds of families, or feed many people yet. A lot of what I do may be wasteful because I don’t have the same access to sustainability measures as larger businesses.
I’ve seen smaller animal businesses handle their animals horribly, and be wasteful.
The size doesn’t make the quality. The care of the humans, and the ability to continue to improve and see a need for change are what is important. Are there larger businesses that should change what they do? Yes. Do I believe these people should be reprimanded? Absolutely. But the exact same thing can be said of small businesses.
I hate how we shame people for being able to grow their own business- as if that automatically translates into animal abuse and not environmentally friendly.
I am a small business and I support businesses of all sizes. I support management practices of all kinds. As long as the business has the animals’ care, and becoming more efficient, at the forefront of their concerns, then I refuse to bash them simply for expanding.
Let’s stop this stereotype of businesses and help each other improve as an industry and work to get rid of the bad apples, and keep the good guys- small and large.
