Images of a normal stomach, pylorus and duodenum from a gastroscopy in a horse having behavioral issues under saddle. Not only is a gastroscopy necessary to properly diagnose Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome, but gastroscopy is also a useful tool to RULE OUT ULCERS as a cause of the problem!!! Ruling out EGUS can help us better get to the bottom of the problem for the horse, in a much more cost effective, expedient way vs empirical treatment for 28 days when it is not needed!

In this episode of The Equine Vet Connect, Dr. Dee Whelchel from Equine Medicine Consulting Services joins us to break down Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS)—one of the most common causes of poor performance in horses. We talk through the difference between squamous vs. glandular ulcers, why gastroscopy is the only true way to diagnose ulcers, and how treatments like omeprazole (GastroGard), sucralfate, and misoprostol actually work.

We also get into the things that matter just as much as medication—feeding strategies, ulcer prevention, risk factors, and management changes that can make a real difference long-term.

It’s an honest, practical conversation that every horse owner, trainer, and rider can take something from.

The episode is out now on Spotify 🎧
