As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re resharing one of our favorite Mutual Rescue reminders: sometimes, the animals we save help save us right back. 🧡🐾

Your new pet isn’t giving you a hard time — they’re just adjusting. 💛🐾

One of the most important things to remember after adoption is the 3-3-3 Rule: a simple guideline that helps explain how dogs and cats often adjust to a new home.

🐶🐱 The first 3 days:
Everything is brand new and overwhelming. Your pet may hide, seem nervous, sleep a lot, avoid food, or act completely different than you expected. They’re still figuring out if they’re safe.

🏡 The first 3 weeks:
Your pet starts settling in and learning the routine. This is often when their personality begins to shine — along with some quirks and behaviors. Patience and consistency go a long way here.

💛 The first 3 months:
Trust is building. Your bond is growing. Your pet is starting to understand that this is home.

Every animal adjusts differently, and some need more time than others — especially shy pets or animals coming from stressful situations. The biggest things you can give a newly adopted pet are patience, kindness, routine, and time.

Sometimes the most rewarding relationships are the ones built slowly. ✨

Thankful: “I would like one moment of peace.”
Delight: “Absolutely not.” 🐈

Like many moms, Thankful spends a good portion of her day being lovingly harassed by her child. And yet, she still grooms him, naps beside him, and keeps teaching him important cat life skills like:

✨ how to stretch dramatically
✨ how to ask for snacks and attention
✨ how to sprint around the room at 3am

The truth is, these two adore each other — and they make the sweetest little duo. +DYK: When you adopt a mama cat at HSSV, you can bring home one of her kittens at no additional cost! Mom and baby can continue to keep each other company while kitten learns all the important ways of being a cat.

We wish we could take every single one home with us. All of them. Immediately. 🥹🐶

But apparently “adopting 47 puppies at once” is “not realistic”… so these adorable little faces are looking for families of their own.

You could be the best friend they’ve been waiting for.

Hope wasted absolutely no time making herself at home. 🐶

First order of business? Claiming the couch.
Second? Convincing her brother, Kino, that they were officially best friends.

It took a couple of weeks, but now the two of them spend their days wrestling, chasing toys, and playing nonstop.

Since going home, Hope has been thriving. She’s enjoying homemade meals, adventures to new sniffspots, brave little car rides to pick out treats and toys, and lots of training as she grows. And after a vet visit, her family discovered something that made everything make sense: Hope is basically still a puppy!

Which explains the endless energy, the clumsy antics, the dramatic playtime whining, and the adorable howling sessions. Her family says she’s "wild, crazy, vocal, affectionate, and completely perfect."

“We love everything about her," her adopter shared. 💛

There is truly no better feeling than earning the trust of a “shy” cat. 🥹💛

One day they’re keeping their distance…and the next? They’re leaning into your hand for ear rubs like they’ve been waiting for this moment forever.

Sweet Sarah may have started out a little reserved, but once she feels safe, her affectionate side shines. And that first head lean from a shy cat feels like winning the lottery. ✨

Now this gentle girl is soaking up pets, greeting her people happily, and proving that sometimes the quietest cats have the biggest hearts. Congratulations to Sarah and her new family!

Most people will never notice the quiet work happening for community cats. 🐈💛

The cat with the tipped ear behind a parking lot. The volunteer setting humane traps after dark. The neighbor who knows every cat by name. The kittens who were never born outside because someone stepped in to help.

These photos, captured by our TNR Specialist, Sophie, offer a glimpse into the world of HSSV community cats — and the people working every day to care for them through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).

TNR helps community cats live healthier, steadier lives while humanely reducing outdoor cat populations over time. It’s compassionate, community-based work that depends on people paying attention, showing up, and caring deeply for cats many others may never even see.

Thank you to the feeders, trappers, rescuers, fosters, and neighbors helping create safer futures for cats across Santa Clara County. 🐾
