Today, we said goodbye to an old friend! In a few days we were planning to celebrate his 33rd birthday, however Ted had other plans. He told us this morning he was just too tired and his legs couldn’t carry him another day.
We first met Ted in 2002 when his owner Karen moved him here from Colorado. He’s been a fixture on this farm for the most part of his lifetime. Karen truly gave him the best life. It’s been our pleasure to care for him well into his golden years.
Ted carried more than a rider. Ted carried years. Ted stood in the same stall and grazed in the same field for so long that the wood around him darkened and the ground beneath his feet learned the shape of his hooves. We watched seasons change around him —spring mud, summer heat, the first frost that made his breath visible in the early light. Ted knew the sound of every truck, every voice, every feed bucket long before we reached him. There was a time when he moved with purpose and stamina, like the day he knocked the fence down and ran through the hay fields next door!
Horses like Ted do not leave empty spaces. They leave memories. Years of memories. The stall & field look different without him. The barn just doesn’t feel the same.
Thank you for the miles, the mornings, the quiet company, and the long, faithful years. You gave all of us the best of yourself for a very long time. We will carry that with us.
Rest well, old friend.
