Some of the strongest roots in our community are the young people growing up in it. ❤️🌱🇺🇸

A BIG thank-you to Columbia High School for the kind words and an EXTRA big thank-you to every FFA member who helped us unload the pumpkins! 🎃💪 Your helping hands meant so much to our Big Barn Blooms family.

Farming takes hard work, patience, and people willing to pitch in. Seeing the next generation step up gives us so much hope for the future of agriculture and the communities that depend on it.

Among these young people are our future farmers, growers, and agricultural leaders who will help feed our families and care for the land. They deserve our encouragement, our support, and a community that shows up for them, too. 🌾🚜❤️

We can’t wait to see how each homeroom decorates its pumpkin! And to the ladies in the front office we hope those flowers brought a little extra sunshine to your day. 💐☺️

👀🌻 THESE ROOTS HAD A JOB BEFORE THEY REACHED THE TRUCK! ♻️🌱

Tonight’s Big Barn Blooms harvest started with a plan to grow better soil.

Remember the buckwheat we planted August 5? Its fast-growing canopy helped shade weeds and cover the ground while we prepared for our fall garlic patch.

We chopped it before the seed matured. Opening that canopy let the daikon radishes take over and LOOK at those roots! 🔨🌱

Daikon’s strong taproot can help loosen compacted soil, create channels for water and future roots, and capture nutrients already in the soil. That’s nature helping us do the groundwork.

The sunflowers brought another deep-rooted crop into the plan and buckets of sunshine to share with our community. 🌻💛

Different plants. Different jobs. A planned succession of cover crops, working toward the next harvest.

And here’s the kitchen surprise: daikon roots AND their tops are edible! The tops are radish greens. Sauté them with garlic, roast or pickle the roots—or shave the roots into thin ribbons, season them smoky and savory, and pan-fry them into daikon “bacon.” 🥓👀 Who’s trying that with us?

Next: get the garlic patch ready and sow winter rye in our walking paths. Rye’s fibrous roots help hold soil, capture leftover nutrients, and protect the ground through winter.

Healthy crop residue left in the patch can break down and feed soil life. Cover the soil, grow roots, recycle organic material, and keep planning ahead. ♻️📈

Tomorrow, October 8, 4–9 PM, those fresh-picked sunflowers become FREE community sunshine at Columbia Witches Night Out! 🌻🧙‍♀️
