This is two of Bardu D' Watermael. It has been difficult to acquire this breed. I am hoping we are raising a second rooster from a second set of hatchlings. If we do he is going with the mixed flock of bantam. This will allow me to switch roosters in a year or without trying to find more, and add new blood. At the moment we are all set to offer these beautiful bantams.

I am keeping this Marans trio. I had gotten extremely discouraged with this breed, due to very low quality or mixed breeding claiming to be pure. However this trio plus my blue hen (a year old), is the start of a strong good quality flock. I had thought I didn't have run space for them, but my small turkey flock is actually happier to be with Barnvelder. I can't have too many hens for a lot of reasons. So rather than doing 9 laying hens per run (original goal). We are doing 6 laying hens per run, this allows me to keep more retirees (hens who don't lay but love cleaning my yard). We are all set to be able to supply Svarthona, Barnvelder, Copper Marans, Crested Cream Legbars, Bardu D' Watermael as pure bred. We also added olive egger, moonbeams, green egger as hybrid chicks. We will have a small group of random barnyard bantams (simply because we fell in love with a few tiny cuties over the years). Of course there will be turkey, Muscovy, and call ducks.

So I have bought a lot of eBay eggs in my time. I have gotten extremely good at hatching shipped eggs. If the eggs are flown (this is guessed best on speed from location to location) they must sit 24 hours on the package before unpacking and then sit another 24 hours beFore loading into the incubator. Those with the shortest trip either inside NY, PA, WV, VA, etc only need 24 hours rest. Anything that has to go through the Chicago distribution center won't make it. The best packages with the best outcome are eggs wrapped in paper towels and buried wood chips. Second best is eggs wrapped in paper towels put in egg cartons and wrapped in wood chips. Plastic hurts fertility and doesn't allow the eggs to breathe. I don't like foam either. Double boxing and tin foil on second boxing does help eggs that must travel through Chicago. I only go two to three generations before I add new blood. I only buy eggs from good breeders. I do buy eBay eggs and hatch those eggs for anyone looking for a particular breed. There is the price of the egg purchase. I charge ten up front if most are fertile on day 14 it's another ten at hatch. If on day 14 nothing or very little is viable, you won't be charged the extra ten. I will still hatch the few but not charge you the extra it

So the Svarthona and Bardu D' Watermael are doing well. My free barnevelder is as well. So I still love my Spitzhaubin and Crested Cream Legbars. I am definitely adding the Svarthona and the Bardu D' Watermael, however I need to figure out if the Marans stay or I switch to Barnevelder. Can't have every breed. Spitzhaubin since 2021, Crested Cream Legbars since last year. Svarthona replaced the Sumatra and the Bardu D' Watermael replaced the old English. I don't like competing with other breeders or tractor supply. I loved my Sumatra, however I did want a fibro breed not just a black one. Crested Cream Legbars are my only "common breed" besides the Marans. Trying to decide if barnevelder or Marans are better for getting olive eggers. Or if I should just keep three Marans in the Crested Cream Legbars pen and add Barnevelder. Personally except for dark eggs I am not a Marans fan. Nothing actually appealing about them. With them being common, it is just not a great fit. I wish there was a "rare" breed of dark brown egg layers. However my crazy pen is doing well, it has D'uccle rooster with pyncheon, naked neck, and an owl beard hen. Just up in the air on Marans versus Barnevelder.
