Today, weโ€™re celebrating the happiest Gotcha Day to our very own clinic cat, ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ! ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’™

Chester came to us after being run over by a car in a parking lot. He had two broken back legs and was unable to walk. After lots of rest, care, and patience, his legs began to healโ€”and Chester learned to walk again!

It didnโ€™t take long for this goofy guy to decide that life at the clinic was much better than life on the streets. Over the past year, Chester has officially become part of the Care family and an important member of our team. He even makes appearances at our staff meetings! ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿˆ

When heโ€™s not busy supervising the clinic, Chester enjoys napping, biting Dr. Goode and Dr. Amandaโ€™s hair, and joining the staff for lunchโ€”where he continues to be the most lovable menace around.

Last week, we talked about botflies in horsesโ€”but did you know ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ด๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ณ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ผ?!

While itโ€™s a different species than the botfly found in horses, ๐˜Š๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ข botflies typically target ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜€. Dogs and cats can become accidental hosts when theyโ€™re sniffing, exploring, or investigating areas near rabbit or rodent burrows. ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿ‘ƒ

In late summer and early fall, ๐˜Š๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ข lays eggs around these burrows. When an unsuspecting pet comes along, the larvae can enter through an opening in the body, including the ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฒ, ๐—ฒ๐˜†๐—ฒ๐˜€, ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐˜„๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ.

Most commonly, the larvae burrow beneath the skin and create a small, painful swelling known as a โ€œ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒโ€ often with a small breathing hole or opening. You may even see movement within the warble if the larva is present.

If you notice an unusual lump, swelling, or what appears to be a botfly larva on your pet, ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ปโ€™๐˜ ๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ณ!
