If you've ever owned a cat, you likely know just how sensitive their whiskers are! But did you know that these tiny sensory tools play a big role in helping cats navigate the world?

A cat's whiskers are deeply embedded in the skin and surrounded by sensitive nerve endings and blood vessels. Even the slightest movement, like a gentle breeze, can cause their whiskers to detect changes in their surroundings!

Because whiskers are so sensitive, it's important to take special care of them. Some cats may experience discomfort from repeated whisker contact (𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘦) with the sides of deep or narrow food and water bowls. Using a 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲, 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝗼𝘄𝗹 may help keep mealtime comfortable for your feline friend.

Have you ever seen a horse flop down, roll onto their back, and wiggle around like a giant toddler? It’s a funny sight - and most of the time, totally normal! Horses roll for several reasons:

🐴 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 - Herds often have favorite “rolling spots,” and horses may take turns. The dominant horse usually rolls last to leave the strongest scent.

🪰 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 - Dust and mud help shield horses from biting insects and can even offer a bit of sun protection.

✨ 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳‑𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 - Rolling loosens dead hair and skin — especially helpful during spring shedding. Many horses also roll after exercise to relieve an itch.

💆‍♀️ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 - Rolling helps stretch the back, neck, and legs, and can feel great after a workout or stall time.

🚨 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆? - A sudden change in rolling habits — repeated lying down and getting up, thrashing, kicking at the belly, or signs of discomfort — may indicate colic or another painful condition.

Knowing your horse’s normal behavior helps you spot when something isn’t right. If you notice concerning changes, give us a call at 𝟵𝟴𝟵‑𝟴𝟳𝟭‑𝟭𝟭𝟱𝟳.

Most of us have seen a dog lift their leg to urinate, but have you ever wondered 𝘸𝘩𝘺 they do it?

For dogs, urinating isn't just about emptying their bladder—it can also be a way of communicating. Dog urine contains scent molecules that provide other dogs with information about who was there, and dogs use their incredible sense of smell to pick up on these chemical messages.

So, why do they lift their leg? Lifting their leg allows dogs to leave their scent on a 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲, where it can be easier for other dogs to detect. Leaving their urine higher up may also make the marking appear to come from a larger dog than it actually does!

While leg-lifting is commonly associated with male dogs, 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼. Some females may urine-mark more frequently when they are in heat, which can help communicate reproductive status.

And here's an important one for pet parents: 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗴'𝘀 𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵. An older dog may stop lifting their leg if the position becomes uncomfortable or painful.

So next time your dog stops to "leave a message," remember—they may be saying a lot more than you think! 🐶

𝗥𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 that can affect both animals and people. It is found in wildlife around the world and, once clinical signs develop, rabies is almost always fatal. Sadly, thousands of people die from rabies each year, with 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟵𝟵% 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀.

But there is some incredible work happening to help change that! 🌎❤️

The rabies vaccines we use at 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝘁 are made by 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗸, which participates in the 𝗔𝗳𝘆𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺. Through this program, for every eligible vaccine purchased, a rabies vaccine is donated and administered to animals in developing countries across Africa and Asia.

The goal? 𝗧𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗴-𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬.

That means when you vaccinate your dog or cat right here in 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗼𝗻, 𝗠𝗜, you're not only protecting your own pet, your family, and your community—you’re also helping protect animals and people around the world. 🐶🐱🌍

Did you know that approximately 𝟰𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗰𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 are reported in the United States each year?

And while cat bites may look small, they can be 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀.

A cat’s sharp, narrow teeth can puncture deep into the skin and push bacteria from their mouth deep into the tissue. This can make cat bites particularly difficult to clean and treat. In fact, 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟭 𝗶𝗻 𝟯 𝗰𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

So, if you’re bitten by a cat, don’t brush it off just because the wound looks small! Cat bites can become serious infections quickly, especially when they occur on the hands or fingers.
