Did you know that the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo is one-of-a-kind? It is, in fact, the only zoo in this country that is located at a high school. The zoo was established in 1936 at Millbrook School, a coeducational independent high school in Millbrook, New York. Its founder, Frank Trevor, was Millbrook School’s first biology teacher, a man with a passion for sharing his love of wildlife with all people, e

specially children. And there are plenty of other interesting facts about the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo:

It houses more than 160 exotic and indigenous animals
70 different species are represented
It is home to 10 endangered species
Its facilities extended over 6 acres
It operates a veterinary clinic
It is one of 240 zoos in the U.S. accredited by the AZA (Associations of Zoos and Aquariums)

We have a limited number of slots still open for our Summer Volunteer Program at the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo. This volunteer opportunity is geared toward students aged 13-years-old through senior year of high school. The program runs during July and August.

Participants must be available for a three-hour block of time (9:00-12:00) or (1:00-4:00). Although you can be flexible in choosing days of the week and scheduling around summer vacations, we would like a commitment of approximately 10 sessions during the program. If admitted to the program, there is a $300 non-refundable program fee payable to the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo.

The school year has come to a close and our Zooies are beginning their summer break. We’d like to thank all our 2025-2026 Student Curators for their hard work this past year.

Taking on the role of curator is no easy task. To do it well you need a strong passion and a lot of dedication to the zoo. You need to show up. You need to work hard. And you need to lead by example.

This past year was the biggest the zoo has ever had, with close to 100 students working in the zoo each season - fall winter and spring. And we could not have this program and do what we do without our student curators. You left Millbrook and the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo better than you found it, and for that we are forever grateful. Have a great summer and we’ll see many of you back at the zoo in September.

Anton the Binturong enjoys some treats of blueberries and other fruit.

The binturong (also known as the “bearcat”) is a unique, tree-dwelling mammal native to the forests of Southeast Asia. Famous for its prehensile tail and an unmistakable scent that smells like popcorn, they are neither bears not cats.

Today is World Otter Day, established by the International Otter Survival Fund to raise awareness about the world’s 14 different species of otters and the dangers they face, including habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. Various otter species can be found on every continent except Australia and Antartica.

The Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo has been home to North American River Otters since the 1970s. Our otter exhibit is actually natural habitat for river otters, including a stream, waterfall, and lots of natural enrichment. That might explain why our otters are so happy to be here! Currently we house one otter, Scooter, who you can see every day.

Scooter was rescued when she was found abandoned at only 5-weeks of age, on a farm here in Duchess County. Our staff did their best to rehabilitate her, teaching her to swim and catch fish on her own. However, because she came to us at such a young age, she became accustomed to humans and associates them as caregivers, and that made her not releasable back to the wild. The difficult decision was made to keep her at the zoo where she has become a favorite among visitors, staff, and students.

Otters are not pets. They are wild animals. This World Otter Day, help change narrative for otters online. We know their cuteness is hard to resist, but engaging in otter entertainment actually causes them harm. Please, only observe these incredible animals in the wild or at AZA accredited zoos and aquariums. Don’t visit “Swim with Otter” programs. Don’t visit Otter Cafes. Don’t keep otters as pets. And don’t share social media that encourages or shows any of those things!

The Frank W. Trevor Cup is awarded to a member of the graduating class who has made the most significant contributions through study, project or zoo work to the natural sciences and environmental stewardship at Millbrook School. We often think of this as the zoo prize. This year the award goes to Max Amsterdam.

Science Department Head Mr. Jonathan Howe had this to say:

"My colleagues and I have observed Max to be a bright, curious, tenacious student and Zooie. He has certainly logged a tremendous number of hours and been a ubiquitous presence at the zoo, so I doubt anyone is surprised by this award. He has been a zoo curator for two years and served as head curator this year. Max gives tours at the zoo, helps the staff with any and all tasks, and particularly loves pointing out inefficiencies and room for improvement...which is a good thing.

Max was part of the crew that represented the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo at the annual conference of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums this year. Max enjoys shadowing the vet as she makes her rounds and, according to Ms. Depew, Max often asks the staff to 'Save me the good stuff' during these visits.

Since arriving at Millbrook, Max has worked to raise the visibility of the zoo and to bring more students over the bridge. With the Halloween night at the zoo and the contest to design a new photo op, Max found creative ways to generate interest in our amazing zoo. Not surprisingly, Max drew on his zoo experience and his love of the otters in particular for inspiration of his independent science research project entitled 'Every Otter Day - Effects of Waterfall Access and Enrichment on Stress and Behavior in the North American River Otters at the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo'.

This morning, Millbrook’s Class of 2026 completed their student journey at the school and zoo. Congratulations to all, and especially to our graduating Student Curators who have done so much over the years to help keep the zoo running and moving towards a bright future! We look forward to welcoming you back as Alumni and sharing the zoo with you in the years to come.

Happy World Turtle Day! Please never remove a turtle from the wild to ‘rescue’ it or take it to an area with fewer roads. Turtles are familiar with the landscape and may try to return, and risk crossing more roads. Removing even one adult female turtle from the wild can hurt local populations.
