🍦 OFFICE CLOSING EARLY TODAY 5/28🍦

Millbrook Equine will be closing the office at 3 PM today as the team gathers for a very important mission: sweet treats and saying farewell to Dr. Eve Donoghue as she begins her next chapter.

Dr. Donoghue has been part of Millbrook Equine for many years, beginning as an assistant to Dr. Miranda Gosselin when she was in high school!

Please join us in thanking Eve for everything she has brought to Millbrook Equine over the years. We are so grateful for her dedication to great care, sense of humor, hard work, and all the memories shared along the way. Wishing her nothing but success and happiness in what comes next! 🍦 💛

We've had a soggy May this year ☔️. While that's great for everyone's pastures and grass growth, all this moisture can increase the risk for Potomac Horse Fever cases.

❓So, what is Potomac Horse Fever (PHF)?
▶️ PHF is a non-contagious, infectious disease that is life-threatening but preventable in horses and donkeys. PHF is caused by the bacterium Neorickettsia risticii, which is primarily transmitted through freshwater snails, aquatic insects, and other waterborne organisms.

❓What are the symptoms?
▶️ Symptoms can range from appetite loss to mild fever to diarrhea and can even include laminitis from excessive fever. PHF can be life-threatening but vaccinated horses generally have a better chance of survival and experiencing milder symptoms.

❓What are the risk factors?
▶️ Risk factors for PHF include housing near (within approximately 5 miles) a freshwater stream or river or on irrigated pasture in endemic areas; and nighttime use of barn lights which attract parasitized insects. There is increased risk and a higher chance that PHF will be fatal in unvaccinated equines.

❓What do you do if you suspect PHF?
▶️ If you notice fever, loss of appetite, diarrhea or signs of laminitis in your equine, contact us immediately. Be sure to also practice good biosecurity protocols. Early intervention is critical in managing PHF and reducing the risk of severe complications.
▶️ Stay proactive!

Schedule your horse's PHF vaccine now. If you are unsure of how recently your horse was vaccinated against PHF be sure to check in with our office. Call or text the team at 845-677-5500

Hudson Valley traffic jams involve a lot of honking 🪿

We do our best to be on time, but horses are unpredictable… and apparently so are the geese. Thanks for your patience with us as we make our way around to provide great care for your horses ❤️

☀️ Big temperature swings can be hard on horses ☀️

We've quickly jumped into several days of 85°+ temperatures (rewind to last Friday when it was 50° and cloudy!). With even warmer weather expected today, horses may need some extra support as they adapt to the sudden change.

A few reminders to help keep your equine partners comfortable:
💧 Offer plenty of fresh, clean water at all times
⛱Make sure horses in turnout have access to shade so they can escape the direct heat of the sun.
🧂 Consider adding electrolytes, especially for horses sweating more than usual
🐴 Be mindful of exercise intensity, particularly for older horses, horses that are out of shape, or those returning to work
🚶 Remember that even a good walk can be a workout in high temperatures
🚿 A cold hose-down or shower can be a great way to help your horse cool off after work or turnout
💨Airflow is key for stabled horses. Open doors/ windows and utilize fans whenever possible, but be sure that wires are not causing additional hazards and that they cannot be reached by mouthy horses!

👀Watch for signs that your horse may be struggling with the heat including excessive sweating, fatigue, elevated respiratory rate, or lack of interest in eating and drinking. If you're worried about your equine partner, don't hesitate to give our team a call!

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and take it easy while everyone adjusts to the sudden summer weather! ☀️

We're thrilled to have welcomed Angela to the team this spring!

Angela's lifelong passion for horses began in her hometown of Kalamazoo, Michigan. From the ages of nine to 18, she participated in the 4-H Horse Project each year. After high school - much to her mother's chagrin- she spent her savings on a Thoroughbred and spent some time on the hunter/ jumper circuit.

Following a summer position at an Arabian breeding farm where she developed a strong interest in reproduction and breeding management, she attended Colorado State University's short course in stallion handling and AI. She later went on to manage both Arabian racing and Standardbred racing stables in MI.

Angela moved east after the shutdown of Michigan's racetracks. Her first stop in NY was the Buffalo area and then the Hudson Valley. Over the past 15 years she has been handling stallions and breeding/ foaling out Standardbreds- and owns a retired Standardbred!

In her spare time Angela can be found enjoying photography, hanging out with her retired horse and two cats, reading a book on the each at Lake Michigan, swimming, hiking, skydiving, canoeing/ kayaking or spending time around a bonfire with friends. She hails from a large Italian family and travels to Michigan to see them frequently.

While we're keeping Angela pretty busy as Dr. Alana King's assistant and with various stallion & repro duties, be sure to say hello next time you see her and officially welcome her to team Millbrook Equine!

Moms are always worth celebrating, both two and four-legged!

Happy Mother's Day to the mares, moms, and caretakers who make the horse world go round 🐴💕

Your horse’s job may be to compete, trail ride, teach lessons, or just be your pal… but every horse benefits from a thoughtful care plan 🐴✨

A performance evaluation gives your veterinarian a chance to look at the whole horse and help create a strategy to keep them feeling and performing their best while helping you reach your goals.

These evaluations can help identify subtle soreness, stiffness, compensation patterns, or areas that may become bigger issues down the road. From there, treatment plans can be tailored specifically to your horse (and budget!). They can include everything from simple diet and exercise changes to integrative medicine and beyond. Our team reaches for solutions like:
• Acupuncture
• Chiropractic care
• Shockwave therapy
• Joint support
• Targeted body work
• Nutrition and diet adjustments
• Conditioning recommendations

Preventative care throughout the year often means fewer surprises, fewer setbacks, and potentially lower costs in the long run.

🔑 Sometimes the biggest key to success is simply having experienced eyes on your horse before small problems become major ones.

With the recent surge in fuel prices, we’ll be implementing a gas surcharge on farm calls beginning this month ⛽️

This decision wasn’t made lightly, but it allows us to continue providing the high level of care your horses deserve while keeping our team on the road and running sustainably.

Looking to save a bit? 💡
Haul-in appointments remain a great, cost-effective option and are always welcome. Split farm calls are another fantastic way to save!

Thank you for your understanding and continued trust in our care 🐴💛 ... and of course we've used a cute foal photo to soften this news, because we too believe that cute foals make everything better!

📢 FEI VACCINATION UPDATE 📢

Beginning July 1, 2026:
➡All vaccinations must be recorded digitally in the FEI HorseApp
➡A veterinarian must log the vaccination on the same day it is given, with the horse present
➡Horses arriving at FEI competitions without correct vaccination records may trigger sanctions for the Person Responsible (Athlete) under FEI Veterinary Regulations

The transition period ends June 30, 2026 ⏳
No fines will be issued during this educational phase

⚠️ Starting July 1, 2026 ⚠️
Incomplete or inaccurate vaccination entries in the FEI HorseApp may result in formal penalties and fines

What owners/ FEI competitors should do now:
✔ Review your horse’s vaccination schedule to ensure it is current
✔ Book vaccinations well in advance of FEI competitions & remind the office that you need an FEI HorseApp Recording
✔ Confirm your veterinarian records the vaccination in the FEI HorseApp on the same day it is administered
✔ Check the app afterward to be sure the entry is correct

🚨Reminder
Owners are responsible for making sure all vaccination records are properly entered and up to date in the FEI HorseApp
