Honey panics when you approach the car.

She tries to flee when you open the door.

She wants nothing to do with food or praise in this situation.

She is great once she's in the car! But she refuses to hop in herself even though she has mad ups! She can jump on people just fine 😅 she jumps on couches just fine. It's just the car.

So how to we help her? By pushing her through the stress quickly and effectively so she can build the confidence she needs to hop into the car. Not to get too scientific, but the faster you get a dog to DO THE THING they refused to do, the faster you can help them make positive associations to the thing 😆

I don't always say this, but she is genuinely such a sweetheart. She loves people and other dogs, she just needs some help building impulse control!

Kado after his 1 week reactivity rehab!

He came to me because he would bark nonstop at guests, bit a guest, and lunged at dogs on walks. His owners resorted to driving him to a local park to avoid their dog-friendly neighborhood.

Now they can walk peacefully in their neighborhood, and have guests over without the constant barking and stress.

Kepler is officially off of his medication and thriving!

I've gotten some (borderline insane) comments about his body language from people. Saying he looks nervous, he looks stressed, etc.

Working a behaviorally challenged dog through their issues is stressful for them! Avoiding any kind of stress does absolutely nothing to benefit the dog.

Sure, it can be stressful for the human to learn how to strategically work a dog through stress. Many people avoid doing the hard work because it doesn't feel like sunshine and rainbows 🌈

Working a dog through stress is how you build resilience. Pushing a dogs stress threshold is how you end up with a dog who can DO MORE and STRESSES LESS.

One-on-one session with Sammy!

Sammy is a reactive dog who's owners were doing all the right things → rewarding Sammy when he made good choices; offering him ample exercise; giving him a loving home and a happy life. Yet, he was still reactive, and they were worried that Sammy wasn't living his best life because walks were so stressful for everyone.

So they purchased an e-collar from E-Collar Technologies and hired me for a session so they could learn exactly how to use this amazing tool.

The only piece of the puzzle missing in their training plan was corrections for the unwanted behaviors. Saying "no" isn't mean, it's the kindest thing one can do for their dog.

This session was such a huge success for them! I'm so excited for Sammy and his owners to enjoy their walks again 🥰

Sonny is learning that place is a duration command.

Place is simply going to, and staying on an object on command. I don't immediately require a down on the place bed. HOWEVER, once a dog understands that when I say "place" they're going to be there for a while (achieved by using e-collar pressure when they get up from the place bed before being released), they quickly learn to settle when they hear the command. So even if I don't SAY "down" or demand it, the dogs still go to the place bed and immediately lay down 🤯 this is how we achieve that - patience.

Excitement! Your energy can be ruining your commands.

Getting your dog worked up and excited is a great way to encourage your dog to break command. If you are calm, neutral, and mindful about how you praise your dog, they will be less likely to break command when you praise them.

I see it all the time.

Client dogs break command as soon as they hear the word "good."

Additionally, if you say a command with too much excitement, you can actually make it harder for your dog to obey. The calmer you say commands - the more likely your dog will be calm in their follow-through.

THIS IS SO IMPORTANT. Especially for dogs like Kepler here [who is reactive]. The more you jazz him up, the more likely he is to transfer that excitement and energy onto the next dog he sees 👀

Welcome Kepler!

Extreme dog reactivity and anxiety had Kepler's owner seeking out help. She went through another board & train (8 weeks), then to a positive-only trainer (for sessions with a stuffed dog), and to a vet behaviorist (who wants him quite sedated).
