It’s been awhile since I posted an update, but it’s been a pretty busy couple of weeks.

Mouse and Remi both went home in the past couple of days, and when I dropped Remi off, I picked up an 11 year old Morgan mare that needs to be started.

Missy has been saddled a few times now, and though she wasn’t sure about it at first, she has improved greatly, and is getting much more trusting with people.

I have a horse of my sister’s here as well, Jack is a red roan, one eyed gelding that just needs some miles and exposure to get used to things on his blind side.

And the two minis are a project of my own, both of them need some gentling and feet work, and the little gelding needs some serious dieting.

Yesterday was a productive day here, Mouse went for a nice little ride, Remi was saddled and bridled for the first time ever and handled it like a champ.
We also welcomed a new addition last week and sent Penny home. Missy is a 6 year old mare with minimal handling. She is a smart thing but she’s also big and a little bit of a handful. We’ll see how far she improves over the next month.

Went on a wagon/trail ride yesterday with Swagger, lots of activity, bridge and water crossings, and 16 miles of trails and he did amazing.
One of the things I was asked to work on with him is when he would be ridden out, he wouldn’t go in a straight line, he would wander back and forth and not really pay attention to what he was doing. To remedy this we’ve been going out on some long rides on varying terrain to help his focus on what the rider is asking him to do. He has greatly improved, and rarely strays from the path I’m asking him to go now.

Rode both Swagger and Mouse today before the heat hit, they both are coming along quite nicely.
Mouse is learning how to move out nicely and flex while being ridden, as well as stopping with both one and two reins.
Swagger is learning to respond nicely to neck reining at slower speeds, we will begin adding more speed here in the next few days.

The youngsters got to take a break for the day and I rode Swagger out for a day in the breaks looking for elk sheds. All in all despite the smoke it was a nice, cool day for the middle of July.

A little bit of ground driving for all the youngsters.

I love to ground drive young horses, but just those I’m going to be riding shortly, but any young horse I work with. There’s really no such thing as starting to drive them too young. It is a fantastic way to teach them how to move out on command without you being in line of sight, how to flex and bend their bodies going around corners, and how to respond to pressure the way they will have to once they get a bit in in their mouths. They also learn to get accustomed to things following along behind them, which can make some horses nervous at first, so it’s always a good thing to get them over that fear before you’re on top of them.

Today Penny and Remi had their first ground driving lessons, and they both excelled for their first times.
As for Swagger, he’s just an all around amazing dude who I love to work with, and he’s such a quick learner, I’m excited to see how much he can learn over his time here. And Mouse is just the sweetest thing, taking everything we do in stride.

I am so grateful for the people who sent me their horses to work with. Although I am new to this whole working for myself thing, it has been an exciting journey so far, but I couldn’t have done it without them giving me the chance. So this is me saying thank you, you have helped me make the beginnings of my dream possible.

We’ve had a productive last couple of days here at M Cross Horsemanship. Welcomed two new additions-
Penny, who is a year old QH filly. She’s a sweet little thing that’s here for some basic ground manners, as well as some desensitizing.

Remi is a two year old Morgan gelding, who is sweet but much more spunky than his pasture buddy. He’s here for ground manners and desensitizing as well.

As for Mouse, she’s been saddled and handled it like a champ, and is learning how to disengage her hindquarters and forequarters.

Swagger has been learning how to side pass nicely and how to allow people to open and close gates off his back.

The first two client horses were dropped off today.
First off is Swagger, a 6 year old gelding who is here for a tune up and to get a better handle on him. Second is Mouse, a 2 year old filly, who is here to be started under a saddle. I’m excited to work with them and watch them progress over their time here.

Many times what people identify as discipline problems with their horses are really frustrated and confused horses, basically caused by the horse having an identity crisis, and or too much stored energy. Horses that are confined and isolated for extended periods where they are denied social interact...
