Between our harrowing English lessons (just kidding, he’s a good boy), Riggs is still the man when it comes to pulling the cart around. We went for a pretty big trip around town Friday evening and he did so well for me! This little cart is just a blast!

Good morning Friday! It’s been a busy week working, managing, and doctoring horses.

Pibby is back to her daily rehabbing riding program to get her a little more prepared for the rigors of working cows. She’s very out of shape after not riding for so long, so we are working on her overall conditioning as well as getting that left front foot a little stronger. During our rides in my pasture or in the neighborhood, occasionally we will take a yearling along, so I’ve been cycling through the yearlings and teaching them how to pony from another horse. Biscuit is the most adept, with Pickles close behind, and Boo picked it up pretty quickly too. Vincent is next on the list and Churro is turned out so his lesson will wait until later this fall.

I did some trimming on Cake and Sawny this week and it’s about time I start cycling through the rest of the bunch again. Riggs is shod currently so he’s struck off that list already. So that leaves the JoJo mare, Tugboat, and the 5 yearlings. I will mess with baby Toast’s feet at home later.

Riggs has been getting regular riding, mostly in the English saddle. I try to get him out of his pen every day and ride him 4-5 times a week. This week has been mostly English riding, and he’s been fun. He was unusually forward and a little strong on our last ride, so it’s something to work on. He’s figuring out how to come off my leg better and we are working on the magic of “through,” which is something I’m still learning as well.

All in all it’s been a great week so far, and very productive.

Riggs continues to pack me around in the English saddle! Monday night saw us cruising down the trails through town on a late evening/night ride. Riggs is confident and so solid outside, and such a joy to ride.

Jessi convinced me to get some safety stirrups for this outfit, and they are far superior in comfort and should break out the sides if I get into trouble. I also picked up a fancy little English bit that I cannot remember the name of. It has some great feel with both Pibby and Riggs and I’m looking forward to playing with it more.

Got to go try something relatively new to me this weekend, as my friend Jessi is teaching me the finer points of riding English correctly. I’ve been bouncing around on Riggs in this old English setup like some wild forest troll, and it’s been a ton of fun. Jessi’s showing me how to two-point the right way, and it’s really a cool skill and feels awesome when you get it right, despite being an insane amount of work! I’m looking forward to practicing more at home on Riggs and Pibby and improving my overall riding skills, balance, and strength.

Jessi is pictured aboard her amazing Huckleberry gelding. This horse is such a neat guy with a really unique and quality feel. He’s quite the specimen! The coolest part is that Huck is a great uncle to my yearling gelding Biscuit, and spending time around Huck makes me ever more excited for when Biscuit starts his career under saddle!

Riggs has been so very tolerant of me as I learn this; he’s such a good boy. He’s so gentle and easygoing, and deals with my uncertainty in this setup like a seasoned pro. While it is weird to see the big High Rolling Roany stud in mostly English attire, he does look pretty good all dressed up. He’s sure doing a nice job for me!

After a handful of treatments earlier this spring and giving her 7 months off to heal, Pibby is sound!

I had the chance to bring Pibby home and get her legged back up to fighting shape. She’s very fat after spending the spring and summer out on pasture while her left front foot healed up. Pibby had a soft tissue injury over the winter that took its sweet time to correct itself, but I’m so tickled to have the opportunity to ride her again. In the beginning I wasn’t 100% sure if she would return to being rideable. She’s such a pleasure to have around and she didn’t miss a thing. It’s like she never had any time off. Just get on and GO!

So, Friday we went for a walk around the neighborhood ba****ck in a halter, and we ponied yearling gelding Biscuit with us. I was incorrect thinking that this was his first time being ponied. My friend Jessi had set him up and he had been ponied a handful of times before, this was just the first time he was ponied by me. He did so well, and didn’t need very much correction to stick with us. Biscuit handled the passing cars and got barked at by a lot of dogs, and he was pretty chill about the entire thing. I really like the brain on this little fewspot c**t, he’s a doll!

Cake thinks that’s cute.

This mare NEVER stops. It doesn’t matter how difficult the terrain is, or how long the day ends up being. Cake is always ready to rock and roll and will barely hold herself back from speed power walking when the work is regrettably all over. She’s over 100 rides in and despite having reasonable feel and a great mind, she lives to work.

Bred by Gene and Jan Hetletved, Cake is a 4-year-old full sister to my yearling gelding Pickles, and I can’t wait to see what he’s like under saddle. He’s super quiet and nice-minded while also wanting to be feely and soft. Pretty exciting stuff!

I love the silly food names for these guys.

Riggs and JoJo’s 2026 stud c**t is officially Awesome Toast! Toast isn’t nearly as much of a pet as his yearling full sister Boo was at this age, but he’s coming around and getting more comfortable about me handling him almost daily. I’d much rather halterbreak these guys when they’re 250lbs than when they’re 1000lbs! Toast definitely started out his halterbreaking sessions with a flare for the dramatic, but he has the system pretty much figured out now and wants to be soft on the halter. Toast is also getting better about accepting the human overall and is becoming easier to catch off of pasture. I’m looking forward to spending more time with this sweet c**t!

I was pretty excited when a friend pointed out this hooded San Joaquin bridle bit at a western booth during the Bucking Horse Sale this year. I just had to have it, as it is exactly what I am always keeping an eye out for. Just enough silver, a pretty cheek that I hadn’t seen before, a mouthpiece that is suitable for a range of horses, a reasonable price tag, and not so fancy and perfect that I would feel guilty actually using it. The perfect working horse bit. Now I’m even more happy that it seems to be working for the Riggs guy!

We have been playing around with his maneuvers and ridden work again, now that he’s home from the mare pasture. It didn’t take him long for his mindset to swap from managing his ladies to being the best dude ever around here. I’m totally smitten with this horse. Riggs is so easy to handle and be around, and seems to know what I’m wanting him to do before I have a chance to ask for it. I can’t explain how much I appreciate him!

We also tried Pibby’s center-hung bosalito, and I’m pretty sure this was the first time he has ever worn one like it. It didn’t seem to bother him, and I think it looks pretty sharp. Silver headstalls aren’t usually my thing, but this one came with the bit and I am quite fond of it. I recently made the romal reins, and altogether I’m hoping this can be Riggs’ setup for years to come.

It’s still interesting down at the pasture with all these goobers despite it being well over 100 degrees every day.

My 5-year-old stud Riggs is back home with my mare JoJo and this year’s stud c**t Toast. It’s great having them back home because Riggs is my only solid riding horse outside of work, and I really enjoy having him around to help me with c**ts and to just enjoy the sanity of a broke horse from time to time. When the weather cools off a little we will start working with some of these younger guys.

Meanwhile, baby Toast is practicing becoming a domesticated citizen. He didn’t realize that wearing a halter was part of that task, and he wasn’t a fan at first, but he’s getting it figured out. Toast seems to be quick to pick up new concepts even if he’s a little spicy about them at first. Opinionated babies are such a mood!

Also, the horse of a different color, Biscuit, is doing his best to beat the heat and the flies. It didn’t take him long to find that bathes equal a roll in the sand! This c**t is such a doll.
