Look who’s back to work!

Pibby has been my rock for a long time, and I’m so ecstatic that she is sound and back to riding. After rehabbing her for several weeks to get her back in some sort of working shape after 7 months off from a soft tissue injury, she’s finally back to working and gathering cows! I absolutely adore Pibby and she’s one of my all time favorite horses that I’ve ever had. She reads me like a book, and has such a quality feel about her that makes her really fun to ride. I’m just so happy to have her back!

I should probably introduce this guy!

This cutie sorrel gelding was bred by Long X Quarter Horses in Kaycee, Wyoming. He is a 2025 son of Blue Redemption and out of a daughter of Zee Partytime. His mother Selah Prairie Song was bred by John L Moore near Miles City, Montana, and is a full sister to Zee Zee Crowdercat (an absolutely superb gelding that a friend of mine owns),and also to Michael Honold’s stallion “Hons” Zee Windy Day. Both are fabulous using horses.

He’s on the tail end of his stay in quarantine but I continue to work with him. He’s a sweet-minded c**t with a will to learn and I’ve been enjoying playing with him so far. It’ll be fun to see what he can accomplish with the other coming 2-year-olds once I get going on starting them in a few months.

I will share nicer pictures of him as I work with him more!

I haven’t posted much on this handsome devil!

Sawny is a sweetheart of a 3-year-old gelding. He’s been user friendly and easy to get along with from the very beginning, and I’m having an absolute blast riding him in the hills and working cows. He has 68 rides right now and hasn’t had a bit in his mouth yet. He would be a fabulous one to take up through the two-rein. He’s feely and responsive with nice flowing gaits and such a sparkling personality. On the ground he’s a lovable pest that is always into everything. He’s too friendly for his own good, and is gentle about pretty much everything.

Sawny even got to drag some baby calves with me this spring and did super. Let’s not forget that he was also unceremoniously thrown into roping a bull to doctor this summer and I was so very impressed with his attitude and reliability! I really like how he’s coming along and I’m looking forward to putting more time on him!

This girl just continues to get cooler!

Thursday was a tough ride with a lot of uncooperative bovine, and it took a ton of effort to get them going in the right direction at the beginning of the ride, and towards the end of the ride it was tough to keep everything moving. Cake is really getting a neat handle despite her constant quest for forward movement. I really like how she is developing. She had a few moments during this ride that had that perfect feel that someone like me hunts for, and it was so cool for it to show up even briefly. She’s constantly making progress on her ability to come off pressure and be soft and supple. Cake knows to hunt for a soft feel, but it’s not a super natural thing for her so I’m really proud of what she offered during this ride. This is something that we have spent a ton of time on, so it’s neat to see a glimmer of subtlety in there!

Cake is so hardworking and aggressive about everything, with an incredible work ethic. We had to chase some cows today too and man was she good about it. She picked her leads up and was snappy and responsive, with all her attention riveted on those cows, while still coming smoothly off of my cues. She’s making quite the big circle horse!

Had a jailbreak the other day!

I showed up to the pasture Wednesday evening and Toast was missing from his pen. We started weaning about a week ago and he’s been penned in P1 by himself, but next to his mother JoJo. P1 has a spot in the fence that I can slip through into the dry lot, but a horse generally can’t, and at first I thought he had somehow managed to squeeze through that opening after being in there for several days.

Nope. The tracks said he must’ve laid down too close to the gate and “accidentally” got himself weaseled underneath it, because he was standing in the feeder panels for the dry lot when I found him, happily munching hay. Goober! He has some minor scrapes and scratches, but nothing too crazy. They’ve always got to get themselves cast or stuck under the panels at least once, silly c**ts. At least he didn’t get too torn up!

Rebecca continues to share awesome updates on Pibby’s 2021 foal, Smooch!

Smooch was the first c**t born on my new place, and is still my good mare Pibby’s only offspring. He is sired by Philip and Andrea Huft’s palomino stallion, Frenchmans Elvis. I started Smooch as a two-year-old and rode him on cows as a three-year-old. He got in on sorting, riding big country, and even a little branding with me. Rebecca got him last year as a hard-working 4-year-old, and has been loving riding him! Smooch is super sweet minded with a goofy personality and is always into everything. I really appreciate and enjoy updates from people who have purchased horses from me. It means a lot to know that horses that I’ve either raised or have been through my program are being used and enjoyed by their people. I put a lot of time and effort into these guys and it warms my heart to see them being enjoyed!

Thanks for the update Rebecca!

I know I share a ton of Cake pictures, but she’s just so darned awesome! She’s honest, surefooted, watches every hair on a cow, has the BIGGEST work ethic, and willingly goes in the nastiest, muddiest gumbo country I can find. I’m so smitten with this mare!

Cake is a huge 4-year-old mare hailing from Gene and Jan Hetletved’s program over in North Dakota, by their amazing stallion Awesome Roany and out of my favorite of their mares, Fancy Copper Hancock. Cake’s mother is a massively built, solid mare that consistently has extremely nice babies. I’ve been fortunate to own two out of this specific cross, and I can’t wait to see this year’s full sister in person!

I’m pretty fortunate to have found a set of horses that just work for me!

These Awesome Roany horses out of Gene and Jan Hetletved’s program have carried me through so much. They’re gentle, tough, cowy, and so sweet-minded. Pictured are Riggs and Cake, a couple of my go-to critters these days.
