Many of you may have seen the heartbreaking story circulating on social media of a foal currently battling tetanus.

This is a great reminder that tetanus is a very real disease and it is preventable.

Tetanus is caused by a toxin producing bacteria found in soil and manure. Horses are particularly susceptible, and infection can occur through even small wounds that may go unnoticed. Once clinical signs develop, treatment is intensive, expensive, and unfortunately not always successful.

The good news is that routine vaccination is highly effective at preventing this devastating disease. Tetanus vaccination is included in all of our spring vaccine appointments, making it easy to keep your horse protected.

If your horse sustains a wound and it has been more than 6 months since their last tetanus vaccination, we recommend a tetanus booster. Even seemingly minor injuries can create an opportunity for infection.

Vaccination is one of the safest, most effective, and least expensive ways to protect your horse from a potentially fatal disease. If you’re unsure whether your horse is current on tetanus vaccination, now is a great time to check your records and contact your veterinarian.

An ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure.

Update: Power has been restored. We are back to business as usual!

Our neighborhood was hit pretty hard by the storms this afternoon. There are several downed trees, and we have been without power for several hours.

Unfortunately, cell service at my house is poor, and we rely on Wi-Fi calling.

For now, my plan is to periodically walk down the street to check for service and make sure no emergency calls have been missed. (Not a bad view to get cell service, am I right?)

Making the most of a long drive today by getting some acupuncture continuing education in. 🐴📚

One of the things I enjoy most about veterinary medicine is that there is always something new to learn. Today’s miles are being spent diving deeper into veterinary acupuncture so I can continue expanding the tools I have to help my patients stay comfortable and perform at their best.

Today we received six emergency calls from non clients during business hours. That’s nearly a full day’s worth of additional work on top of an already full schedule and a couple of urgent care appointments for established clients. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to accommodate those non client emergencies.

One of the things that’s most important to me at Lake Erie Equine is building real relationships with our clients and patients. We don’t just know names in a computer system. We know the horses, their histories, their personalities, and the people who care for them. That familiarity makes a huge difference when something unexpected happens.

This is one of our core values. We intentionally limit the number of clients we serve so we can provide the highest level of care possible to every horse and owner who trusts us with their veterinary needs. I wish I could be available to every horse owner who calls, but as a solo practitioner, that simply isn’t possible. By keeping our client base manageable, I can ensure that established clients and their horses continue to receive the personalized care and responsiveness they deserve. 💙🩵

“I have 2 rules. You can’t kick me and you can’t spill my coffee.” ☕🐴

Spring has absolutely flown by, and we are forever grateful for caffeine, good ponies, and clients who keep us laughing through the chaos.

We are currently still booking several weeks out, which is a little unusual for us this time of year, so please plan ahead when scheduling routine appointments.
