Today’s spotlight is on Bart.

Bart has been my better half for an unknown number of years. Maybe 13ish? At this point, we’ve been together long enough that keeping track seems unnecessary.

My life literally couldn’t function without him. He makes sure our dogs don’t go 12 hours without going outside, picks up the slack around the house, and makes sure we have food in the refrigerator. Basically, he keeps our household functioning while I’m busy keeping everyone else’s horses functioning.

You may have met him at an emergency. Bart often volunteers to ride along on evening emergencies. Fun fact: he only goes to emergencies when I’m confident there will be a favorable outcome. So, rest assured, if he steps out of the car, I’m pretty sure your horse is going to live!

In general, people are pretty great at recognizing the grind of being a veterinarian. The long days, unpredictable hours, missed dinners, and emergencies that never seem to happen at convenient times are all part of the job.

But being the partner of a veterinarian, especially when you have your own full time job, is no easy feat either. It means adjusting plans, eating dinner without me, taking care of things at home, and sometimes having to be the responsible adult for both of us.

So today, I want to recognize the person who helps keep my life together behind the scenes. I couldn’t do what I do without his support, patience, and willingness to pick up the pieces when veterinary medicine takes over. 💙🩵

While it’s technically a week for Vet Techs, I’d like to take a moment to recognize our whole team.

Anne joined the practice with minimal practice management skills, but maximum Dr. Kate management skills. After all, she’s been managing me for over 30 years. 😂

When Lake Erie Equine was still just a thought in my head, my mom immediately volunteered to help in any way she could. She has continued to do that throughout the practice’s existence, except now she’s actually on the payroll!

Anne pays all the bills, processes the majority of our bloodwork, and is the only person who can reliably locate the PO Box. Essentially, she does everything except what you see Rose and me doing out on the road.

So while Rose and I may be the faces you see most often, there’s a whole lot happening behind the scenes to keep this practice running. I’m incredibly lucky to have a mom who has supported me, encouraged me, and helped turn this dream into a reality.

Thanks, Mom, for keeping me (and the practice) in line! 💙🩵🐴

Happy National Veterinary Technician Week to all the techs and support staff who keep veterinary medicine functioning!

I’ve made plenty of appreciation posts about Rose over the years, so this year I decided to share a story that pretty much sums up why I’m so glad she’s part of the Lake Erie Equine team.

We were called out to see a Percheron who was down in his stall. His back was up against the stall wall, leaving very little room to safely assess him. I had Rose stay outside the stall while I went in to do a brief exam and come up with a game plan.

In the blink of an eye, this calm, gentle giant started thrashing. Out of the corner of my eye, I watched my escape route disappear, and I had one of those “oh sh*t” moments.

That’s when Rose reached into the stall and yanked me out with one arm.

Total. Beast. Mode.

I’m not entirely sure how you go about hiring someone who is willing to risk their own safety with you and for you, but I am sure glad I have Rose by my side.

Equine veterinary medicine is not for the faint of heart. It takes a special kind of person to show up every day, work with animals that can unintentionally put us in danger, and be ready to jump into action when things go sideways.

Rose, thank you for being that person. I appreciate you more than I can put into words.

“Are you taking new clients?”

This is probably the question we get asked the most, and the answer is yes, but…

Sports Medicine: We are always accepting new sports medicine clients! Whether you’re looking for help with a performance issue, lameness, or optimizing your horse’s comfort and function, we’re happy to discuss how we can help.

Wellness & Emergency Care: We are selectively accepting new clients based on location and availability.

We recently had a large barn sell, which has opened up room for another full barn and potentially a few smaller facilities.

Why the selectivity? Because providing quality veterinary care means more than just showing up to vaccinate horses. It also means being available when those horses need us most.

In order to provide the level of emergency coverage our clients deserve, we have to be thoughtful about both the number of horses we take on and where they are located. While it would be easy to say yes to every request for routine wellness care, I never want to find myself spread too thin to provide the prompt, high quality emergency care that I hold myself and this practice to.

For me, it’s incredibly important that the clients who trust us with their horses’ preventative care can also count on us when an emergency arises.

When I started Lake Erie Equine, I spent a lot of time thinking about the values that were most important to me and the kind of practice I wanted to build. One thing I kept coming back to was the importance of a team approach. Not just within my own practice, but with other equine professionals throughout our community.

When owners, trainers, veterinarians, farriers, chiropractors, bodyworkers, nutritionists, saddle fitters, and other equine professionals work together, everyone benefits. Most importantly, our horses benefit.

Over the past few months, my own horse has faced some challenges and, as a result, has had the opportunity to work with quite a few wonderful equine professionals. Many of them have been willing to see her bright and early in the morning because my schedule isn’t always the most flexible or predictable. In fact, one professional asked me, “How early is too early?” To which I responded, “The limit does not exist.” 😂

We are so fortunate to have so many talented, dedicated, and collaborative equine professionals in our community. As a veterinarian, I value the knowledge and expertise that each person brings to the table. As a horse owner, I’m incredibly grateful for the people who show up for my own horse, too.

I’m honored to be part of this team, and I’m grateful to be part of a community that understands we’re all working toward the same goal: helping our horses feel and perform their best. 💙🩵

The in person portion of my acupuncture course far exceeded my expectations!

I gained a much deeper understanding of neck and pelvic biomechanics, came away with practical mobility exercises to help improve function in these areas, and, of course, learned acupuncture techniques to address them.

One of the unexpected highlights was being part of such a small, diverse group of veterinarians. Our class included a Standardbred racing veterinarian, a Thoroughbred racing veterinarian, a veterinarian primarily focused on English performance horses, and a veterinarian new to equine practice. The variety of backgrounds and experiences brought such an interesting perspective to our discussions. I even picked up a few helpful tips from my colleagues on procedures outside the scope of the course!

I knew this course would be a valuable addition to my practice, but I left with far more knowledge, practical tools, and appreciation for the opportunity to learn alongside such a great group of colleagues than I had anticipated.

I can’t wait to put what I’ve learned into practice and use these new skills to help my patients feel and perform their best! 💙🩵

Just a reminder that after morning appointments tomorrow, Dr. Kate will be headed south for continuing education.

Lake Erie Equine will be closed Friday afternoon through Monday afternoon while Dr. Kate completes the in person portion of her acupuncture course.

Wellington Veterinary Clinic will be available for emergencies during this time. As always, clients may also self refer to Equine Specialty Hospital or The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center for emergency care.

Dr. Kate will do her best to remain available to help triage cases Friday and Monday, but will be in class all day Saturday and Sunday and may have limited availability.

Are you even an equine vet if you don’t rep another practice on your coffee mug? ☕️

The coffee is strong, the phones are busy, and the emergencies are flowing.

I’m working through a backlog of non urgent callbacks from yesterday while keeping up with today’s calls and emergencies. I’m working my way through everyone from most urgent to least urgent and will get back to you as soon as I can.

Lake Erie Equine will be closed Friday afternoon, October 9 through Sunday afternoon, October 12.

Dr. Kate will be traveling out of state to complete the in person portion of her acupuncture course. During this time, we will be unavailable for emergencies.

Dr. Kate will do her best to help triage cases while traveling when possible, but she will be in class all day Saturday and Sunday, so her availability to respond will be limited.

Wellington Veterinary Clinic will be providing emergency coverage during this time. As always, clients may also self refer to Equine Specialty Hospital or The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center if emergency care is needed.

When you’ve had multiple colics in one day and suddenly find yourself Googling whether it’s a full moon… 🌕

Because when the caseload starts feeling statistically suspicious, apparently it’s time to investigate all possible etiologies.

I suppose I’ll just have to blame the temperature change today. ☀️
